Number column: the classical Greek numeral system, where each letter stands for a value and a mark (ʹ, U+0374) shows it is a number. The system also used three archaic letters outside the 24: ϛ stigma (6), ϟ koppa (90), ϡ sampi (900). Because stigma stands at 6, zeta is 7 and eta is 8. The Greek numerals converter turns any number from 1 to 9999 into these letters and back. Letter names that are links have their own page with codes, uses and lookalikes.

Variant forms: ς ϑ ϕ ϖ ϵ ϰ ϱ

Unicode encodes some alternate letter shapes as their own characters. Maths and physics use them as distinct symbols, so copy the exact one you need.

Key facts

  • The modern Greek alphabet has 24 letters, from alpha (Α α) to omega (Ω ω); lowercase sigma has a second, word-final form, ς, which is still the same letter.
  • Seven of the 24 letters are vowels: alpha, epsilon, eta, iota, omicron, upsilon and omega.
  • The Greek alphabet was adapted from the Phoenician script, which wrote only consonants; the origin section below has the dates.
  • Greek letters live in the Unicode Greek and Coptic block, U+0370 to U+03FF; capitals run from U+0391 to U+03A9 and lowercase from U+03B1 to U+03C9.
  • Fourteen Greek capitals have the same shape as a Latin capital or close to it, but each is a different character with its own code point.
  • Every letter button on this page copies plain Unicode text, and the print button makes a one-page chart in your browser without uploading anything.

The Greek alphabet has 24 letters. In order they are alpha, beta, gamma, delta, epsilon, zeta, eta, theta, iota, kappa, lambda, mu, nu, xi, omicron, pi, rho, sigma, tau, upsilon, phi, chi, psi and omega.

How do the Greek letters work?

The Greek alphabet is the writing system of the Greek language and, by way of Latin and Cyrillic, an ancestor of most alphabets used in Europe today. It was among the first alphabets to give vowels their own letters, which is why alpha, epsilon, eta, iota, omicron, upsilon and omega exist as a set of seven.

Each letter has an uppercase and a lowercase form, a name and a sound. Outside Greece, you meet the letters in four places: as maths and science symbols (π, Σ, Δ, λ), as the names of fraternities and sororities, in Bible studies and classics, and in lettering and tattoos. This page is the starting point for all four. It treats the letters as characters and symbols; it does not teach the Greek language.

Where did the Greek alphabet come from?

The Greeks took the Phoenician alphabet, which wrote only consonants, and repurposed the letters for sounds Greek needed. Phoenician signs for consonants Greek did not use became vowels: aleph turned into alpha, for example. This happened around the 8th century BCE, and local Greek cities used different versions for some time. Athens officially adopted the Ionic alphabet, the 24-letter form used today, in 403 BCE; it is sometimes called the Euclidean alphabet, after Eucleides, the archon in office that year. Latin and Cyrillic descend from Greek forms, which is why so many capitals match.

Letter names and sounds changed over time. Ancient Greek distinguished long and short vowels and had aspirated consonants, while in modern Greek several vowels (eta, iota, upsilon) merged into one sound, and beta, for example, is now pronounced like “v”. The pronunciation page lays out the ancient and modern readings side by side.

Which Greek capitals look like Latin letters?

Fourteen uppercase Greek letters are the same shape as a Latin capital or close to it: Α Β Ε Ζ Η Ι Κ Μ Ν Ο Ρ Τ Υ Χ. Computers treat each as a different character from its Latin lookalike, with a different code point, even when the glyphs match. This is useful to know when you copy a Greek letter into a name or a file: it will not sort, search or spell-check as the Latin letter does. The Unicode page lists the confusable pairs.

Lowercase is less alike. Some shapes mislead English readers: ν (nu) is not v, ρ (rho) is not p, η (eta) is not n and χ (chi) is not x.

How do I copy and print the letters?

Each button copies one character, so what you paste is plain Unicode text that works in documents, spreadsheets, chat and design tools. If a paste shows an empty box, the font in that app has no Greek glyphs; switch to a font that does (most system fonts have them). Letters in the table are real Greek characters, not images.

The “Print the Greek alphabet chart” button above the grid prints a one-page reference sheet: all 24 letters in order, uppercase and lowercase, with each name and its English transliteration. It runs in your browser and uses your default paper size, A4 or Letter.

The table also gives the classical numeral value of each letter. In the Greek numeral system, letters stood for numbers, with a small mark after them to show they were numerals. Modern Greek uses Arabic digits for everyday counting; the letter numerals survive mainly in numbered lists and in classical texts.

Where to start

Pick the page that matches what you need the letters for.

  • Formulas and units: Greek letters in maths and science shows what each letter conventionally means in maths, physics, statistics, engineering, chemistry and finance, with notes where meanings vary by field.
  • Typing them: How to type Greek letters covers keyboards, shortcuts and special-character tools for Windows, Mac, phones and common apps, and says what we have and have not tested.
  • Code and markup: Greek alphabet Unicode gives code points, HTML entities and the lookalike characters to avoid; LaTeX Greek letters lists the LaTeX command for every letter, including the variant forms.
  • Your own text in Greek: Greek letter generator turns Latin text into real Greek letters and shows how look-alike text differs.
  • Fraternities and sororities: Greek life letters composes letter strings and shows how chapter names run from Alpha to Alpha Alpha. It holds letters only, no organisation data.
  • Saying the letters: Greek alphabet pronunciation sets modern, classical and English readings side by side in IPA.
  • Numbers: Greek numerals converts 1 to 9999 to Greek numerals and back, with stigma, koppa and sampi.
  • Ink: Greek letter tattoos covers popular letters, spelling real words, final sigma and look-alike mistakes.
  • One letter in depth: sigma, delta, pi, omega and mu each have their own page with every form, code, typing method and common mistake.

Symbols that are not letters, like arrows, stars and hearts, are in the text symbols collection, with maths signs at math symbols and units, constants and chemistry arrows at science symbols, and the Latin alphabet in dozens of decorative styles is at fancy letters A to Z.

Sources and notes

Letter names, order and code points follow the Unicode Standard’s Greek and Coptic chart (U+0370 to U+03FF). The numeral values follow the standard Greek (Milesian) numeral system; the archaic letters stigma, koppa and sampi are covered in the Wikipedia overview below. The sound values are simplified phonemic transcriptions and are explained on the pronunciation page.

Frequently asked questions

Basics

How many letters are in the Greek alphabet?
The modern Greek alphabet has 24 letters, from alpha (Α α) to omega (Ω ω). Lowercase sigma also has a second form, ς, used only at the end of a word, so you will see 25 lowercase shapes in running text. That is still one letter, not two.
What is the Greek alphabet in order?
Alpha, beta, gamma, delta, epsilon, zeta, eta, theta, iota, kappa, lambda, mu, nu, xi, omicron, pi, rho, sigma, tau, upsilon, phi, chi, psi, omega. The table above shows the same order with each letter, its sound and its numeric value.
Which Greek letters are vowels?
Seven: alpha, epsilon, eta, iota, omicron, upsilon and omega. Eta and omega were originally long vowels, epsilon and omicron short ones. In modern Greek, eta, iota and upsilon are all pronounced like the "ee" in "see".
Where did the Greek alphabet come from?
From the Phoenician alphabet, which wrote only consonants; aleph became alpha, for example. The dates and details are in the origin section below.
When did Athens adopt the 24-letter Greek alphabet?
In 403 BCE, when Athens officially adopted the Ionic alphabet, the 24-letter form still used today. The origin section below gives the context and source.
Is the Greek alphabet related to the Latin and Cyrillic alphabets?
Yes. Latin and Cyrillic both descend from Greek letterforms, which is why so many capitals match: Α, Β, Ε and Κ look like A, B, E and K. Computers still treat each as a separate character with its own code point, so a Greek Α is not a Latin A.
What do the numbers beside the Greek letters mean?
They show the letter's classical numeral value: alpha is 1, beta 2, iota 10, rho 100 and so on, with a small mark after the letter to show it is a number. Modern Greek uses Arabic digits for everyday counting. Our Greek numerals converter turns numbers into these letters.
What is the Greek alphabet in English letters?
The table above gives the usual Latin transliteration of each letter: alpha is a, beta b, gamma g, delta d, epsilon e, zeta z, theta th, kappa k, lambda l, mu m, nu n, xi x, omicron o, pi p, sigma s, tau t, psi ps and so on. A few have two forms, such as phi (ph or f), chi (ch or kh), eta (i or e with a bar) and omega (o or o with a bar), because Greek has no exact Latin match.

Where it works

Which page should I read for my use of the Greek letters?
For formulas, read the math and science page; for typing, the how-to page; for fraternity or sorority names, the Greek life composer; for ink, the tattoo guide. Each links from the list on this page, and five letters (sigma, delta, pi, omega, mu) have their own page with every code and lookalike.
Why do fraternities and sororities use Greek letters?
We do not cover the history of Greek-letter organisations here. What we can say is how the letters are used: chapter names are strings of letters, from Alpha to Alpha Alpha and beyond. The Greek life letters page composes those strings and holds letters only, no organisation data.

How it works

How do I print the Greek alphabet chart?
Press "Print the Greek alphabet chart" above the letter grid. Your browser opens its print dialog with a clean chart of all 24 letters: uppercase, lowercase, name and English transliteration. It uses your default paper size, A4 or Letter, and nothing leaves your device. To save a PDF, pick "Save as PDF" as the printer.
Can I type Greek letters without copying them?
Yes. Every major system can add a Greek keyboard, and Word, Excel and Google Docs have their own shortcuts. Our guide to typing Greek letters covers Windows, Mac, iPhone, Android and the main apps.

Tips & limits

What is the difference between ς and σ?
They are the same letter. Greek writes lowercase sigma as ς when it ends a word and as σ everywhere else, so the word for "word" ends in ς. Capital sigma (Σ) has only one form. The transliterator applies this rule for you.
Why do some Greek letters look different in different fonts?
Several letters have two accepted shapes, such as φ and ϕ, or ε and ϵ. Fonts choose one as the default. Unicode also encodes the alternate shapes as separate characters (see the variant forms above), which matters in maths and physics where the two forms can mean different things.
Why does a pasted Greek letter show as an empty box?
The font in that app has no glyph for the character, so it shows a placeholder box. The text is still correct. Switch the selection to a font with Greek coverage; most system fonts have it. The letters here are real Unicode characters, not images, so they copy cleanly.
