Key facts

  • Facebook profile names must stay plain: the name policy rules out symbols, unusual capitalization, repeating characters and characters from multiple languages (Facebook Help Center).
  • Facebook posts, comments and Messenger display Unicode styled text, and the post composer has no native bold or italic.
  • The Facebook bio (Intro) accepts styled letters and emoji, but keep searchable words such as your job or town in plain text.
  • Facebook Marketplace titles can show styled letters, but buyers search with normal words, so plain titles are easier to find.
  • Styled Facebook text can be converted back to normal letters with the Unstyle Text tool on this site.

Where fancy letters work on Facebook

Each Facebook profile field has its own rules. Open Compatibility & details on any style above to see whether your text fits.

  • Profile nameNo

Facebook's name policy rules out "symbols, numbers, unusual capitalization, repeating characters or punctuation" and "characters from multiple languages". Styled letters break it.

  • Posts (profile, Page and group)Yes

Styled text displays. The post composer has no native bold or italic, so Unicode is the usual way to emphasise words.

  • Comments and MessengerYes

Styled letters display like any other text.

  • Bio (Intro)Yes

Styled letters and emoji work. Keep anything people might search for, like your job or town, in plain text.

  • Marketplace listingsPartly

Styled letters display, but buyers search with normal words, so a styled title is likely to be harder to find. Keep titles plain.

These Facebook fonts turn a headline, bio line or comment into bold, italic or cursive Unicode letters that you copy and paste into Facebook. They work in posts, comments, Messenger and your Intro. Your profile name canโ€™t use them, because Facebookโ€™s name policy rules out symbols and unusual letters.

How to use Facebook fonts

  1. Type or paste your text in the box at the top. Every style updates as you type.
  2. Pick a style. Bold and italic read best in a post; save cursive for a short line.
  3. Tap Copy on the row you like, then paste it into your post, comment or Intro.

The one place you canโ€™t use it: your profile name

Facebook is stricter than most social apps about names. Its Help Center lists what a profile name canโ€™t contain. Among the items:

  • symbols, numbers, unusual capitalization, repeating characters or punctuation,
  • characters from multiple languages.

Styled letters such as ๐—ฆ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ต or ๐“ข๐“ช๐“ป๐“ช๐“ฑ are Unicode symbols from the Mathematical Alphanumeric block, and many decorative styles borrow letters from other scripts. Either way, they fall outside the policy. Facebook may refuse the change when you save it, and a name that slips through can be flagged later. The safe rule is simple: your profile name stays plain. Everything else on this page is fair game.

Instagram, which has the same parent company, takes the opposite approach and accepts styled names. If you want a fancy name somewhere, the Instagram fonts page explains where it works.

Ways to show personality without breaking the policy

  • Use your bioโ€™s first line. A short styled phrase there, such as ๐“ข๐“ช๐“ป๐“ช๐“ฑ โœฆ ๐“น๐“ฑ๐“ธ๐“ฝ๐“ธ๐“ฐ๐“ป๐“ช๐“น๐“ฑ๐”‚, sits right under your name on your profile.
  • Style your posts, not your identity. A consistent bold heading style on everything you share becomes a recognisable signature.
  • Create a Page for a creative persona or business. Pages are where brands and projects belong on Facebook, and their posts accept styled text like any other.
  • Use the styled version elsewhere. Instagram, TikTok and Discord all accept styled display names, so your fancy name can live there.

Where styled text works well on Facebook

Posts

Facebookโ€™s post composer has no native bold, italic or headings, so Unicode is the only way to emphasise words in a regular post. The most effective pattern is a bold first line that works like a headline:

๐—ข๐—ฝ๐—ฒ๐—ป ๐—ต๐—ผ๐˜‚๐˜€๐—ฒ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ถ๐˜€ ๐—ฆ๐˜‚๐—ป๐—ฑ๐—ฎ๐˜†

Message us to book a viewing slot.

Facebook truncates longer posts behind See more, so the first line is what most people read. A bold opener catches the eye in the feed, and the details below remain plain, readable and searchable.

Group and Page posts

The same rules apply in groups and on Pages. For community groups, a styled heading separates announcements from everyday chatter:

  • ๐—ฅ๐—ฒ๐—บ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ for recurring posts
  • ๐˜œ๐˜ฑ๐˜ฅ๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ฅ in italic to flag edits
  • โœฆ ๐—˜๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜ โœฆ with a simple symbol frame

Businesses using Pages should keep prices, opening hours, addresses and phone numbers in plain text. Styled digits like ๐Ÿญ๐Ÿญ๐—ฎ๐—บ look neat but canโ€™t be tapped or reliably copied as numbers, and they may be unreadable to screen readers.

Comments and Messenger

Styled letters display in comments and Messenger chats. A short bold or cursive word is enough; full sentences in cursive get tiring fast on a phone.

Bio and Intro

Your short bio accepts styled letters and emoji. As with Instagram, one styled phrase plus plain details works best: ๐“’๐“ธ๐“ฏ๐“ฏ๐“ฎ๐“ฎ & ๐“ฌ๐“ธ๐“ญ๐“ฎ ยท Software developer in Leeds.

Step by step: a bold headline in a post

  1. Type only the headline in the box at the top of this page, for example Open house this Sunday.
  2. Tap bold sans to copy it. Itโ€™s the closest match to the weight of Facebookโ€™s own interface text.
  3. In Facebook, start a new post and paste the headline.
  4. Press return and type the rest of the post normally.
  5. Check the preview before posting. On phones, the first few lines are what shows above See more, so make sure the headline and the key detail both fit there.

Styles for common Facebook posts

Post Example opener Style
Bold cursive
20% off all plants Bold sans heading, plain details
Lost and found ๐—™๐—ข๐—จ๐—ก๐——: grey cat near the park One bold word
Thursday 8pm Bold sans in a frame
Correction ๐˜Œ๐˜ฅ๐˜ช๐˜ต: time changed to 7pm Italic label

Notice that each example styles the label and leaves the facts plain. Neighbours scanning a local group need the time, place and price to be readable at a glance and copyable.

Marketplace: be careful

Marketplace listings are read by buyers who arrive through search. Someone looking for a โ€œdining tableโ€ types those words, and a title written as ๐——๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐˜๐—ฎ๐—ฏ๐—น๐—ฒ is made of different characters. Facebook hasnโ€™t documented whether its search folds styled letters back to plain ones, so assume it doesnโ€™t.

  • Keep titles and prices plain. Thatโ€™s what search and filters rely on.
  • Use styling sparingly in descriptions, for example a bold
  • Never style contact details or measurements. Buyers copy them, and styled digits donโ€™t paste as numbers.

Picking a style for Facebook

Facebook is read by a wide range of ages and on many older devices, so it rewards plain, widely supported styles.

Style Example Best for
Headlines and key phrases; looks closest to Facebookโ€™s own text
Bold serif ๐Ž๐ฉ๐ž๐ง ๐ก๐จ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ž A more formal heading, such as for church or school groups
Notes, edits, quoted phrases
Celebrations, birthday and wedding posts
Small caps แดแด˜แด‡ษด สœแดแดœ๊œฑแด‡ Subtle labels
Underline Oฬฒpฬฒeฬฒnฬฒ hฬฒoฬฒuฬฒsฬฒeฬฒ A link-like emphasis; adds a mark to every letter

Phones, computers and older devices

Styled letters look the same in the Facebook app and in a browser, because they are characters rather than formatting. The difference comes from the deviceโ€™s fonts. Bold, italic, cursive and small caps display on current iPhones, Android phones, Macs and Windows PCs. Less common styles, such as runic or Yi letters, can appear as empty boxes on older Android phones and some Windows setups. Since Facebook audiences often include relatives on older hardware, the safest styles are the ones in the table above. Our guide to boxes in fancy text explains why this happens.

Accessibility and copying

Screen readers handle styled letters badly. Depending on the reader, ๐—ข๐—ฝ๐—ฒ๐—ป may be spelled out as โ€œmathematical sans-serif bold capital Oโ€ฆโ€ or skipped. Facebookโ€™s audience includes many people using assistive technology, so:

  • style headings and single phrases, not full posts,
  • never put essential information only in styled text,
  • for designed text, post an image and write alt text for it.

If youโ€™ve received styled text and need it back as normal words, for a document or a search, paste it into Unstyle Text. More background is in our fancy text accessibility guide. Messaging-heavy users should also see the WhatsApp fonts page, since WhatsApp, unlike Facebook, has native bold and italic.

Style a headline or one phrase and leave the rest plain, so Facebook fonts help a post stand out without making it hard to read or search.

Frequently asked questions

Basics

How do you make bold text on Facebook?
Facebook's post composer has no bold button, so people paste bold Unicode letters. Type the words above, copy the bold sans or bold serif result, and paste it into your post or comment. It looks bold to everyone. Bold a heading or a key phrase rather than the whole post, which is harder to read.
How do I make italic text on Facebook?
Facebook's post composer has no italic button either, so paste italic Unicode letters. Type your words above, copy an italic sans or italic serif result and paste it into your post or comment. An italic label such as ๐˜Œ๐˜ฅ๐˜ช๐˜ต: works well for flagging a correction, and it is the easiest italic to read.
Which Facebook font style works best for a post?
Bold sans works best for a headline, because it is the closest match to the weight of Facebook's own interface text. Facebook shows longer posts behind See more, so a bold first line is what most people read. Keep the details plain, and save cursive for a short line.

Where it works

Can I use a fancy font in my Facebook name?
No. Facebook's name policy does not allow symbols, unusual capitalization or characters from multiple languages in profile names, and styled Unicode letters fall under that. A name that breaks the policy can be refused or flagged for review. Use styled text in your bio, posts and comments instead.
Do fancy fonts work in Facebook comments?
Yes. Comments accept any Unicode text, so bold, italic, cursive and small caps letters display for everyone on current phones and browsers. Keep it to a word or two in busy threads; a fully styled comment is harder to read and screen readers may read it letter by letter.
Can I change the font on my Facebook Page?
Facebook does not let you change the typeface of a Page. You can paste styled letters into Page posts and the About text, the same as on a personal profile. Keep the Page name itself plain so people can find the business in search, and check Facebook's own guidance before styling it.
Can I use fancy fonts in my Facebook bio?
Yes, the Intro bio accepts styled letters and emoji. Use one styled phrase plus plain details, such as Software developer in Leeds. Keep anything people might search for, like your job or town, in plain text.
Do fancy fonts work in Facebook groups and Messenger?
Yes. Group posts, Page posts and Messenger chats display styled letters like any other text. In community groups a styled heading helps separate announcements from chatter. A short bold or cursive word is enough in Messenger, because full sentences in cursive get tiring on a phone.
Should I use a fancy font in a Facebook Marketplace title?
Keep Marketplace titles plain. Styled letters display, but buyers search with normal words, so a styled title is likely to be harder to find. If you want to stand out, put a short styled label in the description and leave the title searchable.

How it works

Why does my bold Facebook text look normal on some phones?
If letters appear as plain text or empty boxes, the viewer's device lacks a font with those characters, or an app in between has converted them. Bold and italic come from a widely supported Unicode block, so this is rare on current devices. Rarer symbol styles fail more often.
Why is Facebook bold text a different character from normal text?
Facebook has no bold formatting, so the bold you paste is a separate Unicode character from the Mathematical Alphanumeric block, not normal letters made heavy. ๐—ฆ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ต is five different characters from Sarah. That is why it displays anywhere, and why it fails the profile name policy.

Tips & limits

Will styled text affect who sees my Facebook post?
Facebook has not published anything about styled letters and reach. Styled words are different characters from normal words, so they are less likely to match searches, and they can be unreadable to screen reader users. A bold first line followed by plain text keeps most of the benefit with neither problem.
How do I turn styled Facebook text back into normal letters?
Paste it into the Unstyle Text tool on this site, which converts styled letters back to plain ones. That is useful if you copied a styled post and want to edit it, or want a plain version for search or for people using screen readers.
Is bold text on Facebook accessible?
Not fully. Screen readers may read styled letters one at a time or skip them, so a fully bold post can be unreadable to blind users. A bold first line followed by plain text keeps most of the benefit. Keep prices, times and phone numbers in plain digits.
Why can't I use styled digits for a price or time on Facebook?
Styled digits like ๐Ÿญ๐Ÿญ๐—ฎ๐—บ look neat but can't be tapped or reliably copied as numbers, and screen readers may not read them. Businesses using Pages should keep prices, opening hours, addresses and phone numbers in plain text, and style only the label.
