Key facts
- A Telegram username is 5–32 characters of a–z (not case-sensitive), 0–9 and underscores (Telegram API docs), so styled letters are not allowed.
- A Telegram profile name allows a first name of 1–64 characters and a last name of 0–64, and styled letters, symbols and emoji are accepted.
- A Telegram bio holds 70 characters, or 140 with Telegram Premium, and takes Unicode styles.
- Telegram has native formatting (bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, spoiler, code, quote) that keeps the underlying text plain.
- Telegram bot commands such as /start must be plain ASCII; a styled version will not trigger anything.
Where fancy letters work on Telegram
Each Telegram profile field has its own rules. Open Compatibility & details on any style above to see whether your text fits.
- Username (@handle)No
Limit: 32 chars
5–32 characters: a–z (not case-sensitive), 0–9 and underscores (Telegram API docs). The rule that it must start with a letter is a third-party figure we could not confirm.
- Profile name (first and last)Yes
Limit: 64 chars
First name 1–64 characters, last name 0–64 (Telegram API docs). Names are free text, so styled letters, symbols and emoji are accepted.
- Bio ("About")Yes
Limit: 70 chars
70 characters, or 140 with Telegram Premium (Telegram API config). Takes Unicode styles.
- MessagesYes
Both Unicode styles and Telegram's own formatting work. Native formatting (bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, spoiler, code, quote) keeps the underlying text plain.

These Telegram fonts turn your name or bio into styled Unicode letters that you copy and paste into Telegram. Telegram also has built-in formatting for messages, which usually beats styled letters in chat. The page covers both, plus the username, name and bio rules with their limits.
How to use Telegram fonts
- Type or paste your text in the box at the top. Every style updates as you type.
- Pick a style. Bold serif and small caps suit a profile name; use Telegram’s own formatting for chat.
- Tap Copy on the row you like, then in Telegram open Settings, edit your name or bio, and paste.
Two kinds of fancy text on Telegram
Telegram is unusual among chat apps because it ships a real formatting system. That changes the advice compared with, say, WhatsApp or Instagram:
- Native formatting is applied to the message as metadata. The characters stay plain letters, so search, translation, copy-paste and screen readers all work normally.
- Unicode styles replace the characters themselves with look-alikes from other alphabets, such as 𝗯𝗼𝗹𝗱 sans or ᴀ small caps. They work in places where native formatting cannot reach, such as your profile name.
The practical rule: native formatting in messages, Unicode in your name and bio.
Native formatting in messages
Telegram’s developer documentation lists the text entity types a message can carry: bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, spoiler, inline code, code blocks, block quotes and custom emoji. In the apps you reach them from the formatting menu after selecting text, and some clients accept shortcuts or Markdown-style syntax as you type. We confirmed the entity list from Telegram’s documentation; the exact menu labels and keyboard shortcuts differ between Android, iOS and desktop and were not tested for this page.
| Effect | Typical way to apply it | Unicode alternative |
|---|---|---|
| Bold | Formatting menu, or **text** |
𝗯𝗼𝗹𝗱 sans, 𝐛𝐨𝐥𝐝 serif |
| Italic | Formatting menu, or __text__ |
𝘪𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘤 sans |
| Underline | Formatting menu | u̲n̲d̲e̲r̲l̲i̲n̲e̲ |
| Strikethrough | Formatting menu, or ~~text~~ |
s̶t̶r̶i̶k̶e̶ |
| Spoiler | Formatting menu | None |
| Monospace | Backticks around text | 𝚖𝚘𝚗𝚘 typewriter |
| Code block | Triple backticks | None |
| Block quote | Formatting menu | None |
Two behaviors worth knowing. First, formatting does not carry into the username, name or bio. Second, when someone copies your formatted message and pastes it somewhere else, the styling is often lost, while Unicode styled letters travel anywhere.
Use native formatting for anything people need to read or search for later: announcements in a channel, rules in a group, step-by-step instructions. Use Unicode when the styled text must survive a copy to another app, or live in a field that has no formatting menu.
Username, name and bio
Telegram gives you three separate places that identify you.
- Username (@handle). Optional. Telegram’s FAQ says you can use a–z, 0–9 and underscores, and that setting one makes you reachable through global search without sharing your phone number. Telegram’s API documentation sets the length at 5 to 32 characters, and its blog says global search starts once someone types 5 characters. The “must start with a letter” rule is reported by third-party sources; we did not find it on a Telegram page.
- Profile name. A first name (required, 1–64 characters) and last name (optional, up to 64). These are free text: letters from any script, symbols and emoji are fine, so this is where a styled name belongs.
- Bio. A short line under your name on your profile. Unicode works. Telegram’s API config sets the limit at 70 characters, or 140 with Premium, so keep it brief.
To change any of these, open Settings, go to Edit Profile, make the edit and save. There is no cost, and the third-party sources we read did not mention a waiting period for name or bio edits. Usernames are claimed first-come, first-served, and an old handle may become available to others after you drop it.
A name that works for people and for search
People find you by typing letters. Telegram search will not link a styled 𝓛𝓾𝓷𝓪 𝓡𝓪𝔂 to someone typing “Luna Ray”. Two approaches fix this:
- Keep a plain username (
@lunaray) and let the styled name be decoration. - Put the plain name inside the styled one:
𝗟𝘂𝗻𝗮 𝗥𝗮𝘆 | Luna Ray.
If you run a public channel or group, your channel name is what appears in search and in forwarded-message headers, so a plain title and a styled description is the safer split.
Styles that suit Telegram
| Style | Example | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Bold sans | 𝗟𝘂𝗻𝗮 𝗥𝗮𝘆 | Stays legible in the chat list at small sizes |
| Small caps | ʟᴜɴᴀ ʀᴀʏ | Clean for names; not every glyph exists for every letter |
| Bold cursive | 𝓛𝓾𝓷𝓪 𝓡𝓪𝔂 | Elegant, thinner at small sizes |
| Typewriter | 𝙻𝚞𝚗𝚊 𝚁𝚊𝚢 | Tech and bot-themed accounts |
| Bubble | Ⓛⓤⓝⓐ Ⓡⓐⓨ | Playful; reads worse on dark mode at small sizes |
The chat list shows a name in a narrow space and truncates long names with an ellipsis, so put the most important word first.
What can go wrong
- Boxes. Telegram draws Unicode with the device’s fonts, and older Android versions lack some mathematical alphabets. More on the cause is in why fancy text shows boxes.
- Screen readers. Styled letters may be read as “mathematical bold capital L”. Keep key information, like your role or contact, in plain text. The accessibility guide explains why.
- Impersonation rules. Group admins and Telegram’s moderation may act on names that imitate others. Do not style a name to look like an official account.
- Bots and commands. Commands such as
/startmust be plain ASCII; a styled version will not trigger anything.
For a coordinated look across apps, generate your styles once and reuse them on Discord, Instagram and elsewhere using the stylish name generator. For frames and dividers in a bio, the text decorator adds symbols that read well in a short line.
Reserve Telegram fonts for your profile name and bio, and use the built-in formatting when you write messages.
