What a Discord bio is for

A Discord bio, officially the About Me field in your profile, is read by people who already have a reason to look: someone in a server who is wondering whether to add you, or a moderator checking who joined. That changes what it should say. A good bio answers the questions a stranger in a voice channel would ask: what do you play, when are you online, how do you like to be contacted.

Compared with an Instagram bio, a Discord bio can be more practical and less polished. Time zone, pronouns, games and rules for DMs are all useful details.

Length: 190 characters

The About Me field holds up to 190 characters, including emoji, markdown and links, according to Discord support. All items on this page are written to fit within 190 characters, with room for a few spare characters.

Element Typical cost
Plain letter, space or digit 1
Styled letter such as 𝗔 1 (usually)
Emoji 1 to 2 or more
Line break 1
Markdown symbols such as ** or __ 1 each

Markdown works in About Me, and the symbols are part of the count, so a template with several bold labels uses more than it looks.

Markdown in a bio

Discord documents a markdown language for chat: bold with **, italics with *, underline with __, strikethrough with ~~, headers with # and spoilers with ||. The Discord fonts page has the full table. Discord’s help confirms that About Me accepts markdown, but it does not say whether every element, such as headers, renders there. Test before relying on one:

  1. Paste the template into About Me.
  2. Look at the profile preview. If you see raw asterisks, markdown is not rendering there.
  3. If it does not render, replace the labels with Unicode bold letters or plain text.

The last group above uses markdown templates. If any markers show as text in your preview, swap them for the Unicode versions from the generator. Unicode letters work wherever text is accepted, though they are not searchable and may be harder for screen readers.

Line breaks

Press Enter while editing About Me to add a line break. A short, scannable layout works better than a block of text, for example:

𝕹𝖎𝖌𝖍𝖙 𝕺𝖜𝖑 | she/her | UTC+1
Plays: Valorant, Minecraft, Stardew
DMs open for squads

The styled first line identifies you, and the plain lines hold the details people might want to copy. Each break uses one character of the limit.

Accessibility and readability

Keep important information in plain letters. Screen readers may read styled letters one at a time, and Discord search does not match styled letters to plain ones. A role, a time zone, a rule for DMs or a way to contact you should never depend on a decorative alphabet. The accessibility guide explains what goes wrong. If a style shows as boxes on someone’s older phone, see why fancy text shows boxes.

A good habit: write the bio in plain text first, check that it works on its own, then style a name or a heading.

Picking a style

Mood Style Example
Gaming Bold gothic 𝕹𝖎𝖌𝖍𝖙 𝕺𝖜𝖑
Calm and neat Small caps ɢᴏᴏᴅ ɢᴀᴍᴇꜱ, ɢᴏᴏᴅ ᴘᴇᴏᴘʟᴇ
Clear and strong Bold sans 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻
Developer Monospace 𝚜𝚝𝚊𝚝𝚞𝚜: 𝚟𝚒𝚋𝚒𝚗𝚐
Soft and dreamy Bold script 𝓶𝓸𝓸𝓷𝓵𝓲𝓽 & 𝓸𝓷𝓵𝓲𝓷𝓮

The small caps generator, gothic generator and stylish name generator have the full style lists, and the text decorator adds frames like ꧁ ꧂.

Make it yours

Every line is a template. Replace the games, time zone and interests first, then the voice: a bio that sounds like you will attract people who like you. If you are in a server with rules about names or profiles, check them before choosing a heavily styled bio. Moderators can ask for changes that make you readable.

Frequently asked questions

How long can a Discord bio be?
Up to 190 characters, according to Discord's help page on custom profiles, and emoji, markdown and links all count toward it. Styled letters usually count as one character each, while some symbols and emoji may use more, so keep a few characters spare.
How do I change my Discord bio?
Open User Settings, choose Profiles, edit the About Me field and save. If you want a different bio in one server, use the server profile section instead. The field accepts pasted Unicode, so styled text from the generator works. Check the preview, because the profile card shows only part of a long bio at first.
Does Discord markdown work in About Me?
Yes. Discord's help page on custom profiles says the About Me can include markdown, and the markers count toward the 190 characters. It does not list which elements render there, so paste a template and look at the profile preview. If asterisks show, remove that markdown and use Unicode letters instead.
Can I use fancy fonts in my Discord bio?
Yes. About Me accepts ordinary Unicode, so bold, small capitals and script letters display for most people. Rare styles may show as boxes on older phones. Keep contact details, roles and time zones in plain letters so they can be read aloud by screen readers and found by search.
Can I use these Discord bios as they are?
Yes, they are original. Replace the game, time zone, pronouns and interests with your own, and the bio will fit you better than a copied one. Check the length after you edit: longer game names or extra details can push it over the limit.
