Key facts
- Clash of Clans player names are 2 to 15 characters, according to Supercell Support, and frames and symbols count the same as letters.
- Supercell recommends against emoji, special characters such as &, % and $, and non-Latin letters in a Clash of Clans name, because they may not display or may make the name invisible.
- Clash of Clans renaming unlocks at Town Hall 5; the first change is free, then it costs 500 gems, rising by 500 gems each time (Supercell Support).
- Clash of Clans draws names in its own display font, so a character missing from that font appears as a box, a gap or nothing at all.
- A Clash of Clans rename that shows boxes costs the same gems as one that looks perfect, so check the preview before you confirm.
- Clash of Clans clan names follow separate rules; we found no published limit or character list, so test a clan name in the creation screen.

- Player namePartly
Limit: 15 chars
2–15 characters (Supercell Support). Supercell recommends against emoji, special characters such as &, % and $, and non-Latin letters, because they may not display or may make the name invisible. Styled Unicode letters carry the same risk.
- Clan namePartly
Clan names are chosen when a clan is created and follow their own rules. We did not find a published limit or character list. Test a name in the creation screen before spending anything.
- RenamingNo
One free change, available from Town Hall 5. After that a change costs 500 gems, rising by 500 gems each time (Supercell Support).
- Your socials (Discord, YouTube, Instagram)Yes
You can use a styled version of your CoC name on these platforms even when the game does not display it. That is the safest way to match your identity.

This Clash of Clans name style generator turns your CoC name into small caps, gothic and other Unicode styles you can copy, with the character count beside each against the 15-character limit. It is for players who want a styled name and need to know what the game font may refuse.
How to use the Clash of Clans name style generator
- Type or paste your name in the box at the top. Every style updates as you type.
- Pick a style. Small caps and plain capitals are the safest; the Frame menu adds swords, brackets and similar marks, each of which costs characters.
- Tap Copy on the row you like, paste it into the rename box in the game and check the preview before you confirm.
What Clash of Clans does with your name
Your name appears in a few places: above your village, in clan chat, on war maps and in leaderboards. It is drawn in the game’s own display font, not in your phone’s system font. That is the most important fact for stylish names, because it decides which characters survive.
Normal phone apps fall back to a system font when a character is missing, so styled letters nearly always show up somewhere. Games with a custom font often do not. A character the font does not have is replaced by a box, a gap or nothing at all. That is why a name that looks fine in the generator may look wrong in a village.
Supercell’s support article on changing your name sets the rules: 2 to 15 characters, one free change once you reach Town Hall 5, then 500 gems rising by 500 each time. It also warns that emoji, special characters such as &, % and $, and non-Latin letters may not display or may make the name invisible.
How to change your name
- Open the game and tap the settings icon.
- Find the name change option and tap it.
- Type or paste the new name.
- Check the preview, then confirm.
Renaming unlocks at Town Hall 5. The first rename is free; the next costs 500 gems, the one after 1,000, and each later change 500 more than the last. Always check the preview first: a name that shows boxes still costs the same as one that looks perfect.
If you paste styled text, the safest workflow is:
- Paste the name and look at the text box. If characters become boxes or vanish there, they will not work.
- Reduce the name until nothing disappears.
- Only then confirm.
Length
Supercell sets a player name at 2 to 15 characters. Frames and symbols count the same as letters, so a decorated name has less room for the actual word:
| Name | Characters | Left from 15 |
|---|---|---|
| Ironhold | 8 | 7 |
| ꧁Ironhold꧂ | 10 | 5 |
| 【Ironhold】 | 10 | 5 |
| ᴵʳᵒⁿʰᵒˡᵈ | 8 | 7 |
A frame is rarely worth it when the budget is this tight; most of the character budget is better spent on the name.
Styles that tend to work, and ones that do not
We have not tested which characters each version of the game accepts, so this is guidance based on how fonts typically behave, not a tested list.
| Style | Example | Likelihood in a custom game font |
|---|---|---|
| Plain capitalization | IronHold | Always works |
| Small caps | ɪʀᴏɴʜᴏʟᴅ | Often partial; some small-cap letters are rare symbols |
| Superscript | ᴵʳᵒⁿʰᵒˡᵈ | Uneven; several letters come from different blocks |
| Bold gothic | 𝕴𝖗𝖔𝖓𝖍𝖔𝖑𝖉 | Math alphabets are the first thing a game font lacks |
| Boxed or bubble | 🅸🆁🅾🅽 | Frequently fails |
If you want a name that looks distinctive without relying on special characters, change the spelling instead. Replacing letters, adding a short plain suffix (Ironhold_88), or using capitalization (IRONhold) gives a unique name without risk.
Clan names and descriptions
A clan name is chosen when the clan is created and is shown in clan chat, war and search. Supercell filters it, and the clan description has fewer constraints. We did not find published limits, so test in the creation screen.
A practical split for clans:
- Clan name: plain and easy to search. Players look for clans by typing words.
- Description: short, plain sentences describing requirements, war schedule and language.
- Discord or website: the styled version. That is where the clan can use frames and gothic lettering safely.
The Discord fonts page covers styled names and the markdown that works in a server.
Safer alternatives
- Plain name, styled elsewhere. Keep the in-game name simple and use the generator for Discord, YouTube and Instagram. Your identity matches, and nothing breaks in the game.
- Letter swaps. Use
1forI, or double a letter, if the plain name is taken. Avoid replacements that look like staff names. - One safe symbol. If the game accepts it, a single common symbol is better than a frame.
- Image instead of text. For a clan banner or channel art, the lettering image maker uses real fonts, so there is no compatibility problem.
What can go wrong
- Paying for a broken name. If you confirm a rename and it shows boxes, you may have to pay again to fix it. Preview first.
- Moderation. Supercell filters offensive names and impersonation. A name can be rejected or changed.
- Clan mates cannot find you. If your name is nothing but symbols, teammates cannot @-type it in chat or search for it. Keep letters.
- Different devices. The same name can look different on another phone if its version of the game has a different font set.
For games with similar rules, see Free Fire name style and BGMI name style. The guide to boxes in fancy text explains the cause behind most of the failures above.
Before you confirm a rename
Write your current name down first, so you can restore it if the new one looks wrong. Check the length against the box, look at every character in the preview and read the name aloud as a clan mate would. If you are about to pay gems for the change, spend an extra minute: try the plain version first, then add one symbol at a time. A name that works in the box will work in the village, and anything the box refuses was never going to survive the confirm button.
The clash of clans name style generator gives you ideas, but the game font decides what survives, so keep the styled version for Discord and the in-game name simple.
