Key facts
- Lowercase sigma is ς at the end of a word and σ elsewhere, and using σ at the end is the most common error in Greek tattoos.
- Modern Greek has used a single-accent system since 1982, while ancient spelling adds breathing marks, so one word can be written two ways.
- Fourteen Greek capitals share a shape with Latin capitals (Α Β Ε Ζ Η Ι Κ Μ Ν Ο Ρ Τ Υ Χ), so add a letter like Δ, Λ, Σ, Φ, Ψ or Ω if the text should read as Greek.
- Look-alike text generators do not produce real Greek: they mix in Cyrillic, Hangul and other scripts that only resemble Greek letters.
- Alpha and omega as beginning and end (Book of Revelation) and chi and rho as the first letters of Christ in Greek are documented associations.
- Lambda is read differently by different groups, so check how the letter is currently used before choosing it for permanent ink.
Which Greek letter should you choose?
A single Greek letter is the simplest tattoo to get right, and the one most people ask for. A few associations are well documented, and the table at the top lists the ones this page is willing to stand behind. They are conventions: no letter has an official meaning, and the one that matters is the meaning you attach to it.
Why can the same letter mean different things?
Many letters carry different readings in different circles. Lambda is the clearest case: Wikipedia records its adoption in 1970 as the symbol of a New York gay rights group and its later association with gay liberation, and also its use as a symbol by the Identitarian movement, which cites the Battle of Thermopylae. A reader may see either.
Do slang meanings change?
Internet slang and meme meanings change quickly. We do not track them, so look at how the letter is currently used before you commit to something permanent.
How do you spell a Greek word before you ink it?
If you want a word instead of a single letter, the spelling is the problem to solve first.
Ancient or modern spelling?
Greek has an ancient and a modern written form. Modern Greek has used a simplified, single-accent system since 1982, so αγάπη carries one accent, while the ancient form, ἀγάπη, also has a breathing mark on the first letter (ἀ is in the Greek Extended block). A tattoo copied from an ancient text and one copied from a modern dictionary can differ in the same word.
Why not use a translator or converter?
An online translator may give the wrong form, the wrong meaning or a grammatical form that does not fit your wording. A letter-by-letter converter does not translate at all. Our Greek letter generator spells Latin text with Greek letters by sound, which is the right tool for writing an English name phonetically in Greek letters, and the wrong tool for choosing a Greek word. Typing love into it gives λοβε, which is not a Greek word.
What is a safe process?
The safe process is short. Find the word in a dictionary or ask a fluent speaker to write it. Copy the exact text, including accents, into a document and send it to your artist as text and as an image. Ask the speaker to read the final stencil.
Which sigma goes at the end of a word?
Final sigma
Greek has one letter whose lowercase shape depends on position. At the end of a word it is ς, and everywhere else it is σ. Λόγος ends in ς, and Ὀδυσσεύς has σσ in the middle and ς at the end. A copy of the wrong form is the most common error in Greek tattoos. The capital Σ has one form only, so a design in capitals avoids the rule altogether.
Accents, eta and nu
Two other small rules to know. Accent marks are part of the spelling in most Greek words; leaving one out of lowercase text is a spelling error, and a Greek speaker can tell you what applies to a line set in capitals. And the letter η, which looks like a Latin n, is a vowel (like “ee”), while ν, which looks like a v, is n.
Capitals or lowercase, and which letter shapes?
Which capitals look Latin?
Fourteen Greek capitals have the same shape as Latin ones: Α Β Ε Ζ Η Ι Κ Μ Ν Ο Ρ Τ Υ Χ. In a design, a Greek word set in these letters can look English, and an English word can look Greek. If you want the Greek to read as Greek, include letters that have no Latin twin, such as Δ, Λ, Σ, Φ, Ψ or Ω.
Which letters have two shapes?
Several lowercase letters also have two accepted shapes. Phi can be φ or ϕ, theta θ or ϑ, epsilon ε or ϵ, and pi π or ϖ. Fonts pick one as the default. In maths these have different meanings, so for a formula tattoo, make sure the shape is the one your source uses. For lettering, compare the stencil with your chosen glyph. The Greek alphabet page shows the variant forms with code points.
Why do Greek letter tattoos go wrong?
- Look-alike swaps. Latin, Greek and Cyrillic share shapes. If a design is built from pasted text, a Latin A, a Greek Α and a Cyrillic А can all be in the same line, and the artist’s font will draw them the same way. It does not matter for ink, but it matters for any digital copy you keep. Use real Greek letters throughout.
- Fake Greek. Text from a look-alike generator is not Greek. If your artist traces it, the result may be a shape no Greek reader would write.
- Wrong sigma. See above.
- Mixed ancient and modern spelling. If the word has breathing marks, you probably took it from an ancient source. Decide which you want.
- Tiny, dense letters. Ξ, Ψ and Φ carry a lot of detail. Ask your artist what the smallest practical size is for the line width and the place on the body.
- No proofreading. Typos in Greek are invisible to most English speakers, including the artist. Someone must read the stencil who reads Greek.
Which fonts work for Greek lettering?
The font has to include Greek capitals and lowercase letters, and any accents your word needs. A decorative font that was designed for Latin letters often has no Greek, and the app will fill in from a fallback font, so the stencil will not look like the preview. Check each letter in the preview. Our tattoo font guide covers weights, sizes, previews and what to ask your artist, and the tattoo font generator previews Latin lettering styles. Those fancy styles are for Latin letters, so they will not turn Greek letters into a script.
What this page does not do
It does not translate words, invent meanings or recommend a design. It is also not medical or legal advice. Questions about healing, skin reactions, aftercare, minimum age and tattoo regulation belong with a licensed tattoo artist, a clinician and your local rules.

- Greek Letter GeneratorA Greek font generator that outputs real Greek letters, not a font: type a name or word and the tool spells its sounds in Unicode Greek, with final sigma handled. Copy it anywhere. Look-alike Greek-style text sits below, clearly marked as not Greek.
- Tattoo Font GeneratorThis tattoo font generator previews a name, word or date in eight typefaces, from blackletter to script. Compare them and download a PNG to show your artist. It is a sketch, not a stencil.
- How to Choose a Tattoo FontHow to choose a tattoo font: match the letter shapes to what the text says, how big it will be and where it sits on your body. Test two or three styles at real size, then approve a stencil before any ink goes in.
- Greek Alphabet UnicodeThe Greek alphabet Unicode block, Greek and Coptic (U+0370 to U+03FF), holds all 24 letters: capitals at U+0391 to U+03A9 and lowercase at U+03B1 to U+03C9. This page lists each code point, HTML entity and LaTeX command, plus the micro sign, ohm sign and homoglyph traps.
- Text Symbols to Copy and PasteText symbols are Unicode characters, such as hearts, stars, arrows, check marks and brackets, that you copy and paste into bios, names, messages and documents. Each one shows its Unicode name and code point, so you know exactly what you are pasting and can tell it apart from an emoji.
