Key facts

  • Greek capitals run from U+0391 (alpha) to U+03A9 (omega) and lowercase from U+03B1 to U+03C9, in the Greek and Coptic block U+0370 to U+03FF.
  • U+03A2 is unassigned, so capital sigma (U+03A3) follows capital rho (U+03A1) with a gap, and final sigma is its own code point, U+03C2.
  • The micro sign µ (U+00B5) and Greek mu μ (U+03BC) are different characters, and the ohm sign Ω (U+2126) is not Greek capital omega (U+03A9).
  • Fourteen Greek capitals look like a Latin or Cyrillic letter, so mixed-alphabet text can fail searches and spoof names.
  • Mathematical alphanumeric Greek letters start at U+1D6A8; they are for formulas, not ordinary Greek text.

Greek alphabet Unicode: code points and names

The table shows each letter’s code point, its HTML entity and its LaTeX command. Capital letters run from U+0391 to U+03A9 and lowercase from U+03B1 to U+03C9; the same offset applies to both. In Unicode names, lambda is spelled LAMDA (“GREEK CAPITAL LETTER LAMDA”), which follows the Greek spelling λάμδα. Everywhere else, including this site, the usual English spelling is lambda.

The variant forms have their own code points and entities:

Character Code point Unicode name Entities
ς U+03C2 GREEK SMALL LETTER FINAL SIGMA ς ς
ϑ U+03D1 GREEK THETA SYMBOL ϑ ϑ
ϕ U+03D5 GREEK PHI SYMBOL ϕ ϕ
ϖ U+03D6 GREEK PI SYMBOL ϖ ϖ
ϵ U+03F5 GREEK LUNATE EPSILON SYMBOL ϵ ϵ
ϰ U+03F0 GREEK KAPPA SYMBOL ϰ ϰ
ϱ U+03F1 GREEK RHO SYMBOL ϱ ϱ

All named entities above were checked against the HTML Standard’s entity list (the HTML5 table in Python’s html.entities). For plain letters the entity is the English name, for example Α and α. Note that ε is the ordinary ε (U+03B5) and ϵ the lunate form. In HTML5, Ω also exists and resolves to Greek capital omega (U+03A9), not the ohm sign.

How do I use Greek characters in code?

Context Alpha (U+03B1) Notes
HTML named entity α Case matters: Α is the capital
HTML numeric α or α Decimal or hexadecimal
CSS content content: "\03B1"; Backslash and hex digits
JavaScript "α" or String.fromCodePoint(0x3B1) \u{...} for code points above U+FFFF
Python 3 "α" or chr(0x3B1) ord("α") returns 945
Excel =UNICHAR(945) Decimal code point
LaTeX (math mode) \alpha Needs $...$

For text in a LaTeX document outside math mode, the textgreek package provides commands like \textalpha; upright (non-italic) Greek in math needs a package such as upgreek. We list these by name only; check the package manual for options.

What should I know about LaTeX Greek letters?

The short version is below; the full command table, upright and bold Greek and text-mode commands are on LaTeX Greek letters.

  • No command for omicron. Type a plain o. Capital letters that look like Latin letters have no command either (see the table’s last column).
  • Variants. \varepsilon (ε), \vartheta (ϑ), \varpi (ϖ), \varrho (ϱ), \varsigma (ς) and \varphi (φ) give the variant shapes. HTML names run the other way: ϕ and ϵ are ϕ (U+03D5) and ϵ (U+03F5). \varkappa needs the amssymb package.
  • The epsilon trap. In standard LaTeX math, \epsilon draws the lunate ϵ and \varepsilon the curly ε, which is the opposite of what the Unicode code points would suggest. Look at the output.
  • Bold Greek. \boldsymbol (amsmath) or \bm (bm package) makes bold Greek; \mathbf leaves lowercase Greek letters unchanged.

Which characters look like Greek letters?

Which symbols have a Greek twin?

Looks like Is Code point The real Greek letter
µ MICRO SIGN U+00B5 μ GREEK SMALL LETTER MU, U+03BC
Ω OHM SIGN U+2126 Ω GREEK CAPITAL LETTER OMEGA, U+03A9
∆ INCREMENT U+2206 Δ GREEK CAPITAL LETTER DELTA, U+0394
∑ N-ARY SUMMATION U+2211 Σ GREEK CAPITAL LETTER SIGMA, U+03A3
∏ N-ARY PRODUCT U+220F Π GREEK CAPITAL LETTER PI, U+03A0
A LATIN CAPITAL LETTER A U+0041 Α GREEK CAPITAL LETTER ALPHA, U+0391 (and Cyrillic А U+0410)
B LATIN CAPITAL LETTER B U+0042 Β GREEK CAPITAL LETTER BETA, U+0392 (and Cyrillic В U+0412)

The first five are symbols that have a Greek twin. Use the letters for text and the symbols only when the symbol itself is the meaning, as in a formula.

Which Greek capitals are homoglyphs?

The last two rows of the table show homoglyphs, characters from different alphabets with the same shape. Fourteen Greek capitals have a Latin or Cyrillic twin (Α Β Ε Ζ Η Ι Κ Μ Ν Ο Ρ Τ Υ Χ). Mixing alphabets inside a word is a known technique for spoofing names, which is why some systems restrict or flag mixed-script usernames.

What are the mathematical alphanumeric Greek letters?

The Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block (starting at U+1D400) contains Greek sets for formulas. Bold capital alpha is U+1D6A8 (𝚨), and the bold small alpha 𝛂 is U+1D6C2. The italic set starts at U+1D6E2 (capital) and U+1D6FC (small), the bold italic set at U+1D71C and U+1D736, and sans-serif bold at U+1D756 and U+1D770. They also include nabla (𝛁, U+1D6C1) and partial differential (𝛛, U+1D6DB) forms. They are meant for maths typesetting, not for writing Greek text, and they take two code units in UTF-16. The unstyle text tool can turn many styled letters back to plain ones.

Which symbols borrow Greek shapes?

Most of the lookalike pairs above live among the maths and science symbols. The operators ∑ ∏ ∆ and the signs for ohm, micro and angstrom, together with copy buttons, are on math symbols and science symbols. Five letters have their own page with every form, code and lookalike: sigma, delta, pi, omega and mu. The numeral signs stigma, koppa and sampi and the keraia marks are on Greek numerals.

Frequently asked questions

Basics

What is the Unicode range for Greek letters?
The main block is Greek and Coptic, U+0370 to U+03FF. Capital letters run from U+0391 (alpha) to U+03A9 (omega), skipping the unassigned U+03A2, and lowercase letters from U+03B1 to U+03C9 with final sigma at U+03C2. Polytonic Greek, which has many accents and breathing marks, is in a second block called Greek Extended, U+1F00 to U+1FFF.
What is the Unicode code point for alpha?
Capital alpha is U+0391 and lowercase alpha is U+03B1, in decimal 913 and 945. Every other letter follows in alphabetical order from there, with the same offset between capitals and lowercase, except that sigma has two lowercase code points because final sigma is separate, at U+03C2.
Why is lambda spelled LAMDA in Unicode?
Unicode character names follow the Greek spelling of the letter, λάμδα, which has no b. So the code point U+03BB is named GREEK SMALL LETTER LAMDA. Everywhere else, including this site and most English texts, the usual spelling is lambda.

Where it works

Why does LaTeX have no \Alpha or \omicron?
LaTeX defines commands only where the Greek letter differs from a Latin letter. Capital alpha and omicron look like A and O, so you type the Latin capital (or \mathrm{A}) and a plain o. The same applies to capital beta, epsilon, zeta, eta, iota, kappa, mu, nu, rho, tau and chi.
What are the mathematical alphanumeric Greek letters?
A block starting at U+1D6A8 holds bold, italic, bold italic, sans-serif bold and sans-serif bold italic Greek letters for use in maths typesetting, such as 𝛂 and 𝜶. They are symbols for formulas, not a font for ordinary Greek text, and most search and screen-reader software treats them differently from plain Greek letters.
What is the code point and entity for final sigma?
Final sigma ς is U+03C2, GREEK SMALL LETTER FINAL SIGMA. Its HTML named entities are ς and ς. It is a separate character from ordinary lowercase sigma σ (U+03C3), so a search for one does not find the other unless the software normalizes them.

How it works

How do I write a Greek letter in HTML or CSS?
In HTML use a named entity such as α or a numeric one, α or α. In CSS write the hexadecimal code point after a backslash in a content property: content: "\03B1"; Named entities are case sensitive, so Α gives the capital and α the lowercase letter.
How do I get a Greek letter in JavaScript or Python?
Type the character itself, "α", or build it from its code point. In JavaScript use String.fromCodePoint(0x3B1), and in Python 3 use chr(0x3B1). The reverse is ord("α") in Python, which returns 945. Greek letters in the main block fit in one UTF-16 code unit.

Tips & limits

Is the Greek letter mu the same as the micro sign?
No. Greek small letter mu is U+03BC. The micro sign µ is U+00B5, a separate character that Unicode keeps for compatibility with older character sets and that normalizes (under NFKC) to U+03BC. They look the same in most fonts, but they are not identical to a search or a program.
Is the ohm sign the same as capital omega?
No. The ohm sign Ω is U+2126 OHM SIGN, and Greek capital omega is U+03A9. Unicode treats the ohm sign as a singleton that normalizes to U+03A9 in both NFC and NFKC, so the Greek letter is the one to use. Many keyboards and old documents still contain the ohm sign.
Why does my copied "A" not match when I search?
Latin A (U+0041), Greek capital alpha (U+0391) and Cyrillic capital A (U+0410) look identical in many fonts but are three different characters. A search for one will not find the others. This is why look-alike swaps are risky in usernames, domains and anything that must be searched or sorted.
