How to Write queen in Cursive

Queen opens with the one letter that people dislike writing in cursive, and it is followed by a u that has to be reached without a break. The q has a descender and a forward loop, the u is two points, and then comes a pair of e letters before the n. Get the q loop right and the word moves in a smooth ribbon from start to finish.

The joins in queen
- qu: The q descender swings back into a forward loop that closes on the baseline, and the exit rises into the first point of the u. Let the q tail finish exactly where the u begins, with no pause.
- ue: The u exits low, so the e begins from the baseline in its normal place. Keep the u points sharp and the e loop open, so the two letters do not blur into ue as a single wide shape.
- ee: The first e exits on the baseline into the loop of the second. Keep both loops the same size and slanted alike, or the pair looks like a wave.
- en: The e exit rises to the midline and rolls over into the first hump of the n. Make the exit part of the hump so the n has two clean humps, otherwise it reads as u or r.
Tricky spots
- The q forward loop: Most print writers expect a q to end with a stick. In cursive the stem drops below the baseline and loops forward to the right, ending on the baseline. Skip it and the q becomes a g or a plain stroke.
- The pair of e letters: Two open loops in a row can close into dots. Keep them open and equal, with a visible upstroke between.
- Capital Q: The capital Q resembles a 2 with a tail in traditional school cursive and does not connect. Lift after the tail and start the u nearby; too much space makes it read as two words.
Capitals
Capitalise Queen when it is a title or a name, and keep it lowercase in a phrase such as dancing queen. The traditional capital Q is shaped like a large 2 with a tail that sweeps below the baseline; it does not connect to the u, so lift and start the u just to the right. Some modern programmes teach an oval Q with a tail instead. Lowercase q is usually smoother for a signature.
Variations and styles
Queen is made for crowns: a small crown can replace the dot of an i in other words, but here it sits above the q or after the n. A signature-style queen often enlarges the capital Q tail and extends the exit stroke from the n into a flourish. On a mug or shirt, thick brush strokes on the q tail and n humps suit the word. Calligraphy pens give the double e delicate thin upstrokes.
As a tattoo
The q tail and the two e loops are the details to protect. Keep letters at least 1.5 cm tall so the e loops remain open, and leave room below for the q descender so it does not collide with other artwork. A crown placed above the word should leave a gap of a few millimetres. Test the stencil for how the q reads at arm's length.

In script, 𝓆𝓊ℯℯ𝓃 has two adjacent ℯ (U+212F) in the middle of the word, so the pair of substitutes sits between 𝓊 and 𝓃 and a weight difference is easy to see. Starting with a capital changes only the first letter, 𝒬, which is a standard script glyph. Bold script 𝓺𝓾𝓮𝓮𝓷 avoids the pair.
