How to Write Beautiful in Cursive
By Maya Chen, lettering designer and type educator · Checked by Jordan Hale · · How we review content
Beautiful is nine letters and a good test of cursive stamina. It starts with the bridge-ending b, passes through two vowel pairs, has a tall t and an f in the middle, and finishes with u and l. There is one letter that drops below the baseline and two sets of u points that must stay crisp.

Letter by letter
Each distinct letter in "Beautiful" has its own stroke-by-stroke page.
The joins in Beautiful
- be: The b leaves at the midline with its checkstroke, so the e loop starts from that bridge. Dip the bridge very slightly before the loop so the e keeps its open eye and does not shrink to an i.
- ea: The e exits at the baseline and keeps climbing to the midline, then goes over and back to make the oval of the a. Close the a firmly; if the exit is too low, the e and a merge into a single blob.
- au: The a's undercurve exit flows straight into the first point of the u. Keep the a closed at the top and make the u's points sharp at the midline, so au does not look like aw or ou.
- ti: After the t spike, the exit curves up to the i's stem. Keep the i much shorter than the t, and add the t cross and i dot after the word is done.
- if: The i exits at the baseline and climbs all the way to the top line for the f loop. Make that connecting upstroke long and steady; a short one gives a stunted f that looks like an l.
- ul: The u exits at the baseline and sweeps into the tall l loop. The loop should be as tall as the f's upper loop so the last two tall letters in the word look matched.
Tricky spots
- The two u's: Beautiful has u twice, and each needs two sharp points at the midline with a rounded turn at the baseline. If one is rounded and the other pointed, they read as different letters or as n.
- f in the middle: The lower loop of f drops below the baseline in the middle of the word, between i and u. Keep it narrow and close it on the right at the baseline so the following u starts cleanly and does not collide.
- Uncrossed letters: The t needs a cross and the i needs a dot, so finish the whole word first, then go back. Cross t at the height where its spike turns, and dot the i directly above its stem.
Capitals
Capital B in Beautiful is the two-bump form and does not join in traditional cursive, so lift after the lower bump and start the e right beside it. Lowercase beautiful works as a caption or a tattoo and is smoother to write because the lowercase b joins on a bridge. If you want a capital with a connected feel, a plain looped B works in modern styles.
Variations and styles
For a card or wall quote, write beautiful with a large first letter and a long flowing exit under the final l. Signature-style versions often join the b to e with an extended loop. In brush calligraphy, thicken the downstrokes of b, t, f and l, and leave the u's points hairline. Beautiful also works well as a one-word wedding or nursery print.
As a tattoo
Beautiful is a longer word, which means smaller tattoos can run together. Allow at least 10 mm x-height so the two u's, the lower f loop and the e eye remain open as the skin settles. Give the f loop room underneath, and avoid very thin joining strokes between t and i, where fading usually shows first.

Copy-paste versions of Beautiful
Plain script beautiful swaps in one borrowed Letterlike character, ℯ (U+212F), for the e right after the b, and the other letters come from the main script block, so the word can look slightly uneven in some fonts. Bold script 𝓫𝓮𝓪𝓾𝓽𝓲𝓯𝓾𝓵 uses a single block and is the more consistent option for bios and captions.
