"Evelyn" in Playwrite US Trad, a typeface modelled on traditional school cursive.

Evelyn has a lot going on in seven letters: a loopy capital E, a pointed v, an e, a tall l, and a y with a descending tail that runs into a final n. The y is where most people struggle, because the loop below the line must come back up to join the n. Get that right and the name flows nicely.

Letter by letter

Each distinct letter in "Evelyn" has its own stroke-by-stroke page.

The joins in Evelyn

  • Ev: The capital E ends with an undercurve that rolls over into the v's overcurve. Keep the exit curved, and drop into a sharp point at the baseline, not a round bottom.
  • ve: A bridge at the midline leaves the v, which means the e begins high. Dip a little and loop into the e. If the bridge sags to the baseline, the v and e blur into one shape.
  • el: The e exits into the l's tall loop with a steady climb. Keep the e's loop open and the l's loop narrow, so the small e and tall l contrast clearly.
  • ly: The l exits at the baseline into the y's overcurve. Make the y's two strokes with a pointed top on the left and drop the tail below the line in a loop that closes to the left.
  • yn: The tail loop of the y crosses the stem at the baseline and exits into the n's overcurve. Keep the tail narrow and the exit short so the final n is not pulled too far to the right.

Tricky spots

  • The y's tail loop: The loop must close to the left and cross the stem at the baseline. If it is open or goes the wrong way, the y reads as a g or a j, and the n has nowhere to start.
  • v and e side by side: A pointed v followed by a small e is easy to blur. Keep the v's point sharp and give the e a clear loop so the pair reads as ve.
  • Final n: The last n must have two humps and a short exit. If it has one, it looks like a u or an r, and the name ends in Evelyr or Evelyu.

The capital E

Capital E is drawn as two stacked curves with a small loop between them, like a backward 3, and its undercurve exit joins the v. Keep the capital twice the height of the lowercase letters and make the middle loop small and left-pointing.

Evelyn as a signature

The E gives a natural place for a flourish, such as a large, looping entry. The y's tail is another feature: extend it into a curve that sweeps back under the whole name. Keep the n at the end clear, though, because a long tail can swallow it. A shortened version keeps E, v, l and y and tapers the middle.

Short forms of Evelyn

Common short forms are Evie, Eve and Evy. Eve removes the last four letters, leaving a capital E, v and e. Evie adds an i and e at the end, which means a dotted i and an open e instead of the y and n.

As a tattoo

Evelyn is a good length for a forearm or ribcage, and the y's tail adds a pleasant flourish. The y's loop and the tight v-e pair need space: use at least 8 mm x-height and ask for a stencil, since the E and the y tail are the letters most often drawn differently.

Copy-paste versions of Evelyn

Copy-paste Evelyn in script is ℰ𝓋ℯ𝓁𝓎𝓃 and in bold script is 𝓔𝓿𝓮𝓵𝔂𝓷. Two of the seven letters come from the Letterlike Symbols block: the opening ℰ (U+2130) and the ℯ (U+212F) in third place. That gives a capital and a lowercase glyph that can both differ in weight from the 𝓋, 𝓁, 𝓎 and 𝓃 around them. Bold script has no borrowed glyphs, so it looks even.

Evelyn in cursive: questions

How do you write Evelyn in cursive?
Draw a backward-3 capital E, join into a pointed v, then write e, l, y and n. The y's tail drops below the line and loops back up to the left before the n. There is no i in the name, so nothing needs dotting.
How do you write the y in Evelyn in cursive?
Make a v-like shape with a left stroke that is pointed on top, then drop a long stroke below the baseline and loop back to the left, crossing the stem at the baseline. Exit to the right into the n.
Does the E connect to the v in Evelyn?
Yes. Capital E ends in an undercurve, so it joins the next letter. In Evelyn the exit has to roll over into the v's overcurve, so keep it curved rather than pointed. The v then drops to a sharp point at the baseline, and a round bottom there is what turns the pair into Eu.
Is Evelyn written like Eve in cursive?
It begins the same way: the capital E, the v and an e. Evelyn then continues with l, y and n, while Eve stops after the e. That makes Eve a handy warm-up, because the E-to-v roll and the v-to-e bridge are identical, and only the tall l and the descending y are new.
