N in Graffiti Letters

By Maya Chen, lettering designer and type educator · Checked by Jordan Hale · · How we review content

Capital N
Lowercase n

Rendered in the Sedgwick Ave Display typeface, an open-source font. It is a reference shape, not a hand-drawn letter.

N is two posts joined by a diagonal, and the diagonal is the character of the letter. It can be thick or slim, straight or curved, and it decides whether the N feels fast or heavy. In graffiti, N is a workhorse: narrower than M, simple enough to link, and useful as a calm letter between busier shapes. Its main hazard is the pair of triangular gaps that clog as soon as outlines go on.

How to draw a graffiti capital N

  1. 1Draw two leaning posts and a diagonal that starts at the top of the left post and ends at the bottom of the right post.
  2. 2Make the diagonal slightly curved or S-shaped instead of straight, so it feels drawn by hand.
  3. 3Thicken the posts first, then the diagonal, keeping the diagonal as thick as the posts so it does not look like a thin line.
  4. 4Outline the body and check the two triangular gaps, which should be the same size and open to the sky and the floor.
  5. 5Add an arrow to the top of the right post, fill, highlight the left edges and add a block along the diagonal.

Tip: Slightly overshoot the diagonal past the posts at both ends. The overshoot gives the N a cut-through look, and it hides the awkward join where three strokes meet.

How to draw a graffiti lowercase n

  1. 1Draw a stem with a single arch springing from it at x-height, leaning forward.
  2. 2Bring the arch down to a second leg, shorter than the stem, that ends at the baseline.
  3. 3Thicken the strokes and keep the space under the arch wide open.
  4. 4Outline and give the end of the right leg a flick toward the next letter.
  5. 5Fill, highlight the arch, and add a block along the right edge.

Tip: A lowercase n is one of the most reusable shapes in the alphabet, because the same arch makes the body of h, m, r and u.

What makes N awkward or easy

The diagonal collides with both posts, and each collision makes a pointed joint that the outline thickens into a blob. The two gaps are triangles with sharp corners, so they close first. The letter is also narrow, which makes the diagonal steep, and a steep diagonal can look like a slash. Rounding the joins and keeping the diagonal wide are the usual fixes.

Variations

A tag N is a quick zigzag with a flick. A throw-up N is a fat pair of posts with a chunky diagonal and one outline. A piece N may feature arrows on the posts, a curved diagonal and a block shadow. Wildstyle N turns the diagonal into a long ribbon that cuts through the posts and hooks into the next letter.

Common mistakes with graffiti N

  • The diagonal is a thin line against thick posts.

Thicken the diagonal until it matches the posts, and overlap it at both ends.

  • The triangular gaps are different sizes.

Redraw them as two equal triangles, and shift the diagonal if needed.

  • The joins make dark blobs where three strokes meet.

Round the joins, or cut a small notch at each corner to lighten them.

  • The N is leaning but the diagonal is not.

Tilt the diagonal to match the lean of the posts so the whole letter moves together.

Ideas for graffiti N

N is the first letter of names such as Noah, Nina and Nate, and appears in words such as Nice and Neon. For a drill, draw an N with the diagonal in five versions: straight, curved, doubled, arrowed and broken. See which holds up beside an A and a K.

Graffiti N you can copy and paste

Unicode has no graffiti alphabet. The closest copy-paste styles are bold gothic 𝕹 𝖓, black squares 🅽 and bubble letters Ⓝ ⓝ. They are single fixed glyphs, so the diagonal will always be straight and equal.

Graffiti N: questions

How do you draw a graffiti letter N?
Draw two leaning posts and a diagonal from the top of the left post to the bottom of the right. Thicken all three strokes to the same width, outline, and keep the two triangular gaps open. Add an arrow on a post, then fill, highlight the left edges and add a block.
How do I stop an N from looking like a Z or an I?
Keep both posts clear and vertical, and let the diagonal run from the top left to the bottom right. If the diagonal is too thick or the posts too thin, the shape melts into a slash. Make all three strokes the same weight.
What does a lowercase n look like in graffiti?
It is a stem with an arch and a shorter right leg. Thicken the strokes, keep the space under the arch open and flick the right foot toward the next letter. The arch is the same shape as the one used in h, m and r.
Can the diagonal of an N be curved?
Yes, and it often looks better. A gentle S curve gives the N motion and softens the joints. Keep the curve gentle, so the letter does not look like an S, and make sure the two gaps beside it remain equal and open.
