N in Bubble Letters

Rendered in the Bagel Fat One typeface, an open-source font. It is a reference shape, not a hand-drawn letter.
The bubble N is two fat posts joined by a diagonal bar, and the whole letter is decided at the two places where that diagonal meets a post. Done well it looks like a pillow-stuffed zigzag; done badly it pinches into a thin waist. Lowercase n is a different drawing altogether, one post with a rounded arch hanging off it, so this page treats the two forms separately.

How to draw a bubble capital N
- 1Pencil a thin skeleton: a tall left stroke, a tall right stroke, and one straight diagonal from the top of the left stroke to the bottom of the right stroke. Keep both posts exactly the same height.
- 2Inflate the left post first as a long capsule with a half-circle at the top and a half-circle at the bottom, using an outline distance of about one pencil width on each side of the line.
- 3Inflate the right post the same way, then draw the diagonal as a third capsule whose rounded ends tuck into the top of the left post and the bottom of the right post.
- 4Where the diagonal capsule's edge meets each post, round the notch into a soft U-shaped curve instead of a sharp V, and keep the gap in that notch wide enough to fit your fingertip.
- 5Ink only the outer silhouette plus the two notches, erase every line that runs through the inside of the joins, and check that the diagonal is as thick as the posts.
Tip: Draw the diagonal one half-step thicker than the posts on paper. Slanted bubbles look thinner than vertical ones even when the outline distance is equal, so a small boost makes the three bars read as the same weight.
How to draw a bubble lowercase n
- 1Draw a thin skeleton of a short vertical stem at the left and a half-oval arch that leaves the stem a little below its top and lands on a short right leg at the baseline.
- 2Inflate the stem as a capsule, letting it be as tall as the x-height only, with a rounded top and a rounded bottom resting on the baseline.
- 3Inflate the arch as a thick curved tube that grows out of the upper third of the stem, so the join looks like a single piece of balloon rather than two glued ones.
- 4Close the right leg with a half-circle foot at the baseline, then draw the small hollow inside the arch as a tall narrow gap with rounded corners.
- 5Erase the overlap lines where arch and stem meet, and trim the notch at the top so a tiny dent shows where the arch begins.
Tip: Make the arch's counter, the hole under it, roughly half as wide as the stem is thick. A wider hole thins the arch and the n starts to read as an h with a short stem.
What makes N awkward or easy
Capital N has two awkward spots, the top-left and bottom-right joins, where the diagonal's rounded edge and a post's rounded edge collide. If you outline each bar separately, tiny triangular wedges of white get trapped there, and they look like errors. Merge the shapes first and round the leftover notches. Lowercase n is easier but has its own risk, which is arch height: if the arch starts too low on the stem, the letter loses its characteristic shoulder.
Variations
Slant the posts of a capital N a few degrees and the diagonal stays steeper, which gives a sporty, graffiti feel. A drop shadow works well on the diagonal because it creates a clear zigzag. For a sticker look, outline the entire N once more with a thin white border. A kid-friendly N can be drawn as three connected sausages, and an outline-only N is a good colouring page because the notches become natural colour breaks.
Common mistakes with bubble N
The diagonal gets thinner at its midpoint and the N looks pinched like an hourglass.
Draw the diagonal's outline as two parallel lines first, then round only the ends. Keep their distance constant along the whole length.
Sharp white triangles remain in the two notches where diagonal meets post.
Round each notch into a smooth curve and fill small slivers with colour, or widen the gap deliberately so it reads as a design choice.
The two posts differ in height, so the N looks tilted or unstable.
Ruler a top and bottom guideline before the skeleton and let both capsules touch them lightly.
Lowercase n has an arch that starts at the very top of the stem and looks like a flat-topped box.
Start the arch slightly below the stem top so a small bump of the stem remains visible above the join.
Ideas for bubble N
N is a strong letter for names such as Nora, Noah or Nina, for 'No' on protest signs, and for monograms where its diagonal contrasts with round letters beside it. In classroom posters it pairs naturally with M because both are built from posts, which makes them a good matched pair for teaching how arches differ. Use the capital for banner headlines and the lowercase for bubbly captions in notebooks.

Bubble N you can copy and paste
Copy-paste forms exist for N: the circled capital Ⓝ and circled lowercase ⓝ, plus the black-circled capital 🅝 (there is no black-circled lowercase). They are single characters you can paste into a bio or chat, but they are Unicode symbols, not drawings, so you cannot adjust thickness, colour the inside or print them as a sheet. Use them for text, and draw for art.
