J in Graffiti Letters

By Maya Chen, lettering designer and type educator · Checked by Jordan Hale · · How we review content

Capital J
Lowercase j

Rendered in the Sedgwick Ave Display typeface, an open-source font. It is a reference shape, not a hand-drawn letter.

J is a stem with a hook, and in graffiti the hook is a chance to show off. It can drop below the baseline, swing under the previous letter or end in an arrow. Because J is not tied to the baseline in the way most letters are, it breaks the rhythm of a word in a pleasing way. The challenge is balance: a very long hook can pull the whole word off its line.

How to draw a graffiti capital J

  1. 1Draw a vertical stem leaning forward, then curve the foot to the left to form a hook that sits on or below the baseline.
  2. 2Add a short bar across the top of the stem if you want a capital with a flag, which also gives you a place for an arrow.
  3. 3Thicken the stem and make the hook swell slightly at the bottom curve before tapering at the end.
  4. 4Outline the combined shape and keep the inner curve of the hook open so it does not clog.
  5. 5Finish the hook with a spike or an arrow, fill, highlight the left of the stem and add a block along the curve.

Tip: Draw the hook as a wide, shallow U rather than a tight curl. A generous curve survives outlines and gives you more room for an arrow.

How to draw a graffiti lowercase j

  1. 1Draw a stem at x-height that drops below the baseline, leaning forward, with a hook curving back to the left.
  2. 2Place the dot above the stem as a separate shape, kept near the top of the x-height zone.
  3. 3Thicken the stem and the hook, keeping them the same width and letting the curve swell at the bottom.
  4. 4Outline both parts and keep the hook's counter wide enough to see.
  5. 5Fill, highlight the dot and let the hook stretch under the previous letter if there is room.

Tip: The lowercase j has the same descender as g and y, so keep enough empty space beneath the baseline for the hook to breathe.

What makes J awkward or easy

The hook drops into the space below the baseline, which makes J a letter that lives in two worlds. The top is a plain stem and the bottom is a swoop. Because the stem is a single stroke it risks looking thin, and the hook can crowd the previous letter. That makes J a good letter for experiments with overlaps, as long as the stem keeps its weight.

Variations

A tag J is a fast stroke with a hooked end and a dot. A throw-up J is a fat stem with a rounded foot. A piece J may have a top flag, an arrow on the hook and a block shadow along the curve. Wildstyle J lets the hook loop around the neighbouring letter, sometimes closing into a full circle.

Common mistakes with graffiti J

  • The hook is so tight that it fills in.

Draw the hook as a wide U with a generous inner curve before you add any outline.

  • The stem is thin and the hook is thick.

Keep both at the same width and let only the curve of the hook swell.

  • The J sits entirely above the baseline and looks like an I with a flick.

Let the hook drop below the baseline or turn it clearly back toward the left.

  • The dot is attached to the stem and looks like a smudge.

Draw it as a separate shape with a visible gap, or join it deliberately into the stem.

Ideas for graffiti J

J starts names like Jay, Jade and Jo, and words like Jam and Jazz. A good practice page is a row of J hooks that end in different ways: spike, loop, arrow and flick. Test each one next to an A and an O to see how it affects spacing.

Graffiti J you can copy and paste

Unicode does not have a graffiti alphabet. For a copy-paste lookalike use bold gothic 𝕵 𝖏, the black square 🅹 or bubble Ⓙ ⓙ. They are fixed glyphs, so the hook will not extend past the baseline the way yours can.

Graffiti J: questions

How do you draw a graffiti letter J?
Draw a leaning stem and curve its foot to the left to make a wide hook. Add a top bar if you want a flag, thicken the shape evenly and outline it. Finish the hook with an arrow, fill the body, highlight the left side and add a block along the curve.
Does a graffiti J go below the baseline?
It often does, especially the lowercase, but it does not have to. A capital J can sit on the baseline with a short hook. If you drop it, keep the neighbouring letters clear, because a long hook can crash into the previous letter's base.
How do I draw the dot on a lowercase j?
Make it a separate shape such as a bubble, a diamond or a star, placed above the stem with a visible gap. Keep it the same width as the stem, so it does not look heavier than the letter, and match its style to the other dots in your piece.
What is the best way to end a J hook?
A spike or an arrow is the simplest, because it adds direction. A rounded blob looks friendly, and a flick adds speed. Choose one and use it consistently across your piece, so the hooks of J, G and Y look like they come from the same hand.
