J in Bubble Letters

By Maya Chen, lettering designer and type educator · Checked by Jordan Hale · · How we review content

Capital J
Lowercase j

Rendered in the Bagel Fat One typeface, an open-source font. It is a reference shape, not a hand-drawn letter.

J is a stem with a hook, and in bubble form that hook must curve like the handle of an umbrella without turning into a flat boot. The capital sits on the baseline, while the lowercase j has a descender that drops below the line and carries a dot above, so it behaves like a combination of i and g.

How to draw a bubble capital J

  1. 1Draw a vertical stem and curve its bottom to the left in a smooth hook, ending a short way up.
  2. 2Decide whether to add a top bar. A plain J leans on the stem, but a bar at the top can make it easier to read in a row of letters.
  3. 3Inflate the stem and the hook as one tube, with a round cap on the hook's tip and another on the top of the stem.
  4. 4Check the inner space of the hook: it is a small crescent, and it must remain open after outlining.
  5. 5Erase the skeleton and shade under the curve of the hook, where a bubble would be darkest.

Tip: Draw the hook as a quarter of a circle with a radius of at least one and a half strokes. A tighter curve closes the inner crescent.

How to draw a bubble lowercase j

  1. 1Draw a short stem from x-height down past the baseline, curving into a left hook at the bottom of the descender.
  2. 2Mark the dot above the stem, at the same distance you would use for lowercase i.
  3. 3Inflate the stem and hook as one tube, keeping the hook's curve smooth and the end round.
  4. 4Outline the dot as its own circle, separated from the stem by half a stroke of space.
  5. 5Erase the pencil and add a highlight to the dot and to the stem's upper left.

Tip: Draw a descender line below the baseline first. The hook needs room, and if you run out of space you will squash it flat against the next line.

What makes J awkward or easy

The hook is the trouble in both forms. A tight curve yields a thin crescent inside that closes under the outline, leaving a lump instead of a hook. The lowercase j adds length below the baseline, so the letter is taller than most of its neighbours, and its dot must float correctly above a stem that is often far from the other dots in the line.

Variations

In a graffiti style the J hook can extend into a long, swirling tail. A playful J curls the hook into a full circle. Many artists swap the dot for a star or sparkle. An outline J works well as a first letter for tracing, because the hook has one clear path. In 3D, a drop shadow under the hook gives the letter extra weight.

Common mistakes with bubble J

  • The hook is so tight that the inner crescent disappears.

Increase the radius of the hook in the skeleton. After outlining, the crescent should still be wide enough to colour.

  • The lowercase j's dot touches the stem.

Leave a gap of about half a stroke and draw the dot as a full separate circle.

  • The descender is too short and the j looks like an i with a bent foot.

Extend the stem below the baseline by at least the height of the x-height, then curl the hook.

  • The capital J sits too low and looks unbalanced.

Keep the hook above the baseline for a bubble J, ending it at roughly one third of the letter's height.

Ideas for bubble J

J is an initial for Jade, Jonas and Jiya, and JOY and JULY are word signs where the hook is the star. A bubble j with a heart dot is popular on notebook covers. In a monogram, J's hook can cradle a smaller initial, making a neat shape for pillows or gift tags.

Ⓙ and ⓙ are the circled forms, and the filled circle for capital J is 🅙, with no black version for lowercase. The circled ⓙ shows neither the descender nor the separate dot, so the drawing exercise cannot be copied with Unicode.

Bubble J: questions

How do you draw a bubble letter J?
Draw a vertical stem that curves into a smooth hook at the bottom, then inflate it as one rounded tube. Make the hook's radius generous so the inner crescent stays open. Outline, erase the pencil and shade under the curve. A top bar is optional.
What does a lowercase bubble j look like?
A short stem that drops below the baseline and hooks left, topped by a separate round dot. Draw the dot as its own balloon with a small gap above the stem. The descender gives the j extra height compared with i, so leave room below the line.
How do I draw the hook on a bubble J?
Treat it as a quarter-circle. Draw the stem, curve the bottom to the left with a radius of at least one and a half strokes, then inflate the curve evenly. A tighter curve closes the hole inside the hook and the letter looks lumpy.
Does the dot on a bubble j have to be round?
No. A circle is the classic choice, but hearts, stars and small suns are common. Keep its width close to the stem's, leave a clear gap above the stem and match its outline thickness. A heart dot is a quick way to make a name look friendly.
