H in Graffiti Letters

Rendered in the Sedgwick Ave Display typeface, an open-source font. It is a reference shape, not a hand-drawn letter.
H is two posts and a bar, and that squareness is both its strength and its trap. It is stable and readable, which makes it a favourite for the middle of a word, but it also looks stiff and boxy if you draw it as an actual H. Graffiti H is usually changed by moving the crossbar, leaning the posts or turning the bar into a diagonal that connects the two sides in a more dynamic way.

How to draw a graffiti capital H
- 1Draw two leaning vertical posts and a crossbar between them, placed a little above the middle so the letter does not look static.
- 2Tilt the crossbar slightly upward to the right so it adds movement and avoids a ruled-line look.
- 3Thicken the posts and bar to equal widths, keeping the gap between the posts wider than a single post.
- 4Outline the body and trim the four inner corners with small diagonal cuts so the counters stay open.
- 5Add arrows to the tops of the posts, fill, highlight the left edge of each post and add a block behind the bar.
Tip: Make the two inner counters different sizes by raising the bar. A top counter smaller than the bottom one removes the symmetry that makes H look like a gate.
How to draw a graffiti lowercase h
- 1Draw a tall stem on the left, leaning forward, and a shoulder arch that springs from the stem at x-height.
- 2Bring the arch down into a second shorter leg on the right, ending at the baseline.
- 3Thicken the stem and the arch, with the arch swelling at its highest point.
- 4Outline the shape and keep the space under the arch open and clearly arch-shaped.
- 5Fill, highlight the shoulder and let the right leg end in a flick or a block foot.
Tip: The ascender on a lowercase h is a handy place to add an arrow, so the shape can hold a lot of style without losing the arch.
What makes H awkward or easy
H is a symmetric letter in an asymmetric style. Two equal posts and a centred bar look like a fence, so almost every decision is about breaking that symmetry without destroying the shape. Because both posts are free-standing, H also takes on the role of a bridge, where one post tucks behind a neighbour and the other overlaps the next letter.
Variations
A tag H is a tall stroke, a hook and a quick bar. A throw-up H is two fat posts and a short bar, outlined once. A piece H might use a diagonal crossbar, arrows on the tops of the posts and a 3D block on one side. Wildstyle H crosses the posts and weaves the bar through neighbouring letters.
Common mistakes with graffiti H
The crossbar is dead centre and perfectly level.
Raise it a little and tilt it so the letter loses its fence look.
The posts are the same height and angle.
Make one post slightly taller or lean it more, so the H has movement.
The inner corners fill in with outline.
Cut each inner corner with a small diagonal and keep the gaps wider than the strokes.
The bar is thinner than the posts and looks pasted on.
Thicken the bar to the same width as the posts and let it overlap them at both ends.
Ideas for graffiti H
H works in names such as Hana, Hugo or Holly and in words like Hype. A useful drill is to draw an H in five bar positions, high, low, tilted, split and curved, and see which of them still reads clearly when it sits between two other letters.

Graffiti H you can copy and paste
Unicode contains no graffiti alphabet. The closest copy-paste options are bold gothic 𝕳 𝖍, black squares 🅷 and bubble forms Ⓗ ⓗ. They are fixed glyphs, so the posts will always be upright and the bar will stay level.

- Graffiti AlphabetThe graffiti alphabet is a set of bold, connected letters that are deliberately distorted so they look fast, large and hard to copy.
