H in Different Fonts
H is the letter Unicode borrowed most often: four of its styled forms are physics and maths symbols from an older block. Copy any H below and see which ones those are.

From a fence to a breath
The Phoenician letter heth stood for a throaty /แธฅ/ sound and is often interpreted as a fence or courtyard, drawn as a ladder-like shape. Greek used it in two ways. Some dialects kept it for an /h/ sound, which the western Greeks passed on to the Etruscans and Romans as H. In the Ionic dialect, which lost the /h/ sound, it became the long vowel eta (ฮ). Thatโs why the Greek capital eta looks exactly like an H today.
English speakers still argue over the letterโs name, โaitchโ or โhaitchโ, and the h sound itself has disappeared from many words (hour, honest), which is part of why the letterโs identity has always been a bit unstable.
The most borrowed letter in Unicode
Several math alphabets have gaps where Unicode reused an older symbol from the Letterlike Symbols block. No letter has more of these than H:
| Style | Character | Code point | Symbol meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cursive script | โ | U+210B | Hamiltonian operator |
| Gothic Fraktur | โ | U+210C | Hilbert space |
| Double-struck | โ | U+210D | The quaternions |
| Italic (lowercase) | โ | U+210E | Planck constant |
Notice the pattern: almost all of these are named after or connected to William Rowan Hamilton or David Hilbert, whose initials were already standard symbols in physics and maths before Unicode began.
In practice, these four characters come from a different part of the font than their neighbours. On some devices โ looks thinner than ๐, โ sits slightly higher than ๐, or โ is more upright than ๐. The italic โ is the one most people notice, because h is so common; the italic text generator offers bold italic and sans italic, which avoid it. If your name starts with H, the matching options are bold cursive ๐, bold gothic ๐ณ and bold italic ๐ฏ, which are all native to the math block.
Picking an H for a name
H has two vertical stems, so itโs naturally wide and solid:
- Bold cursive ๐ / ๐ฑ: a flowing capital with a loop on the left stem, and the safest decorative H.
- Bold gothic ๐ณ / ๐: very ornate, and hard to recognise as an H at small sizes for readers who donโt know blackletter.
- Double-struck โ / ๐: the capital is the quaternion symbol; the lowercase is native.
- Small caps ส (U+029C): from IPA Extensions, where it represents a voiceless epiglottal fricative. Reliable everywhere.
The handwritten cursive capital H is famously variable between school methods; the cursive H page shows a standard form.
Tiny H
H is well covered at small sizes:
- Superscript: แดด (U+1D34) and สฐ (U+02B0). The small สฐ is the IPA mark for aspiration, as in [pสฐ].
- Subscript: โ (U+2095), one of the 17 letters with a subscript.
Look-alike Hโs
- ะ is Cyrillic โenโ (U+041D), pronounced /n/, and identical to Latin H.
- ฮ is Greek capital eta (U+0397).
- าป is Cyrillic shha (U+04BB), a lookalike for lowercase h.
All three can be mixed into an otherwise Latin word without a reader noticing, which is why they appear in phishing domains and impersonation usernames. The symbol styles use deliberately non-identical characters instead: ๅ (Asian style), ใ (katakana style, actually the hiragana syllable โnโ), ฮ (Greek eta with an accent), โฑง (an H with descender, not a currency sign despite appearing in the currency style) and แบ (the Elder Futhark rune hagalaz). The stylish name generator combines these with decorations if you want something less legible but more distinctive.
Frequency
H is about 6.1% of letters in English, high because of โtheโ, โthatโ, โheโ, โsheโ and every th, sh and ch. Itโs one of the letters where a mismatched styled form gets noticed quickly.
