How to Write Wife in Cursive

By Maya Chen, lettering designer and type educator · Checked by Jordan Hale · · How we review content

"Wife" in Playwrite US Trad, a typeface modelled on traditional school cursive.

Wife is four letters but hides two difficult shapes: the wide capital W and the double-loop f. The W is a lifting capital, so the i starts as a fresh stroke, and the f has loops both above and below the line, which means it can crowd the word. A little room and a steady slant go a long way.

Letter by letter

Each distinct letter in "Wife" has its own stroke-by-stroke page.

The joins in Wife

  • Wi: The capital W lifts, so finish its last stroke, leave a small gap and start the i at the baseline just to the right. Keep the i short and the gap narrow so the pair still reads as one word.
  • if: The i exits at the baseline and rises to the tall f. The f is a top loop, a straight stem and a lower loop. Keep the loops narrow so they do not touch the neighbouring letters.
  • fe: The f lower loop crosses the stem at the baseline and exits along it into the e. Keep the e small and open. If the f loop is too wide, it collides with the e.

Tricky spots

  • The double-loop f: The f is the only letter with loops at the top and below the line. Keep both loops about equal in size, and make sure the crossing happens at the baseline.
  • The capital W: The W is wide, so plan the space. Its four strokes should match in slant and height, and the pen lifts after the last one before the i.
  • Dot on the i: Dot the i after the word is done, directly above the stem. A dot too far right looks like it belongs to the f.

Capitals

Capitalise wife at the start of a sentence or when it is a pet name or title. The capital W is a four-stroke shape that ends in a small curl, and it lifts, so start the i just to its right. Lowercase wife is easier, and the w is a quick wave shape that ends with a bridge into the i.

Variations and styles

For an anniversary gift, write wife in large letters with a heart as the i dot. A signature-style version joins every letter in one stroke, with a long exit from the final e. A pointed pen gives the W and f heavy downstrokes. A simple version for a necklace engraving keeps the loops open and the lines even.

As a tattoo

Wife is short enough to tattoo large, but the f has loops that close up first. Use 2 cm or more of height, leave a clear gap between the f and e, and make sure the i dot is a clear point. A stencil check is worthwhile.

Copy-paste versions of Wife

Wife has a single substitute: the e is ℯ (U+212F), the last letter of 𝒲𝒾𝒻ℯ, while W, i and f come from the main block. Bold script 𝓦𝓲𝓯𝓮 draws all four from one set. Both versions are Unicode symbols and not a font.

Wife in cursive: questions

How do you write wife in cursive?
Write a capital W with four strokes and lift, then add the i, an f with an upper and lower loop, and a final e. Dot the i at the end, once the f loops are done, so the dot lands directly over the stem. Keep the W's gap to the i small and the f loops narrow.
Why does the f in cursive have two loops?
The cursive f is the only letter that goes above and below the line. The top loop gives it height, and the bottom loop lets it join the next letter at the baseline, which in wife is the e. Both loops cross the stem at the same point on the baseline.
Should wife start with a capital W?
Only at the start of a sentence or when used as a pet name or title. Lowercase wife is simpler, because the w is a quick wave that bridges into the i with no lift, and it works well on gifts and engravings. The capital is wider and needs more room.
Can I copy wife in cursive text?
Yes, use the script or bold script versions above. They paste into most apps, but they are symbols rather than a font, so screen readers may read them letter by letter. For an engraving or a printed gift, hand-letter the word or choose a real script font instead.
