How to Write Thankful in Cursive
By Maya Chen, lettering designer and type educator · Checked by Jordan Hale · · How we review content
Thankful has eight letters and five of them reach above the line: T, h, k, f and l all climb. That makes it a good loop-control exercise, and a favourite for place cards, journals and autumn lettering. The f is the biggest challenge, because it has a loop above and a loop below the line.

The joins in Thankful
- Th: Capital T is a cap stroke and a stem, and it does not join. Lift after the stem, then start the h loop to the right of the T. Keep the h shorter than the T so the capital leads.
- ha: The h's last hump exits at the baseline and leads into the a's oval. Make the a small, close it at the top right, and keep the h hump the same width as the a.
- an: The a exits at the baseline into the n's first stroke, which rises to the midline. Keep the n humps rounded, and make the exit sharp so the k can start.
- nk: The n exits at the baseline and rises to the k's full height before the stem retraces. Give the k a small loop and knot on the right.
- kf: The k's exit leads straight up to the f's loop. Start the f's upstroke high and swing in a loop over the stem, then make the lower loop under the baseline.
- fu: The f's lower loop closes at the baseline and exits straight into the u. Keep the u small and pointed at the bottoms.
- ul: The u exits at the baseline and goes up into the l loop. Close the l narrowly, then finish with a short exit or a small swash.
Tricky spots
- Double loop of f: Cursive f has a tall loop on top and a closed lower loop below the baseline. Both loops cross the stem on the same line. Practise the f alone until the crossing point stays steady.
- k knot: The k has a small knot that is easy to overstuff. Make a tall stem, retrace partway, then a small loop to the right with a short exit.
- Letter heights: Thankful has T, h, k, f and l all climbing. Match the heights of h, k and l, and make f slightly taller. Otherwise the line looks wobbly.
Capitals
Thankful is capitalised in titles, at line starts and in phrases like Thankful and Blessed. The capital T does not join, so a small gap follows. In lowercase, thankful has an extra t spike that joins directly to the h, which gives a more continuous stroke.
Variations and styles
Thankful is often written on place cards with a small leaf or a pumpkin in place of a dot. A banner version stacks Thankful, Grateful and Blessed in three lines. In brush lettering, thicken the T stem, k stem and f stem. For a signature feel, extend the l into a long swash that underlines the word.

None of the eight letters is borrowed in plain script, so 𝒯𝒽𝒶𝓃𝓀𝒻𝓊𝓁 comes entirely from the main math script block and keeps one weight across the word, in any font that supports it. Bold script 𝓣𝓱𝓪𝓷𝓴𝓯𝓾𝓵 does the same. Fine strokes of plain script thin out at small sizes, so choose bold for a caption.
