How to Write Thank you in Cursive
By Maya Chen, lettering designer and type educator · Checked by Jordan Hale · · How we review content
Thank you is a card word, and it is the only phrase in this set that starts with a capital T. It has a quiet challenge in the middle: the n has to rise into the k loop, the k has to buckle, and then the y arrives with its descender before the final bridge into ou. Each step is simple alone; the work is in the rhythm.

Each distinct letter in "Thank you" has its own stroke-by-stroke page.
The joins in Thank you
- Th: The capital T is a stem and a separate cap, and it lifts. Write the stem, add the cap, then start the h close to the stem so the gap stays small.
- ha: The h ends with a hump and exits along the baseline, so the a starts low with a standard lead-in. Keep the h hump open, as it is the only thing separating ha from la.
- an: From the a's baseline exit the pen climbs into the n's first stroke. Keep the n's humps rounded and the same width as the a, so the join to the k climbs cleanly.
- nk: The n finishes its second hump and its exit rises toward the top line, where the k loop begins. Make the climb long and smooth, and keep the k loop as tall as the h loop in the same word.
- yo: In you, the y's tail loops back to the baseline and the next stroke starts the o from there. Keep the o a small closed oval so the descender stays the main feature of the word.
- ou: The o closes at the midline and bridges across into the u. The u points should be as sharp as the one in k. If the bridge sags to the baseline, the pair reads as oa.
Tricky spots
- The k buckle: The small loop on the right of k sits at the midline and is easy to blur when you write fast. Close it once, cleanly, and the word will not read as thanh.
- Crossing the capital T: The T is written in two strokes, a stem and a separate cap across the top line. Do the cap last, after the stem, and extend it far enough to clear the h loop that follows.
- Gap between thank and you: The last stroke of the k is a kick and the y starts with a hump, so they look connected. Leave a clear gap and lift, or it reads as thankyou.
Capitals
Capitalise Thank when it starts a sentence or a card line, and leave you lowercase. Capital T does not join the next letter in traditional school cursive: write the stem, lift, add the cap across the top, then start the h close to the stem. For a tag or a hand-lettered sign you can capitalise both words as a title, but the lowercase y looks more fluid on a note.
Variations and styles
On a thank-you note, write the phrase large at the top and sign below. For a wedding place card or a gift tag, a relaxed slant of about 55 degrees and loose spacing suits the words. Signature-style versions often drop the dot-free crossing and run through the k loop with an extended stroke. Brush pens give the T cap and the y tail thick-thin contrast; fine liners keep the k buckle clearer on small cards.

Script 𝒯𝒽𝒶𝓃𝓀 𝓎ℴ𝓊 has one substitute, ℴ (U+2134), in the middle of you, so the first word is entirely regular math script. There is no e in the phrase, so ℯ does not appear. Bold script 𝓣𝓱𝓪𝓷𝓴 𝔂𝓸𝓾 comes from one block. Check that your app keeps the space between the words.
