How to Write Brother in Cursive
By Maya Chen, lettering designer and type educator · Checked by Jordan Hale · · How we review content
Brother starts with a capital B, which has two bumps and a retraced stem, and then has a high bridge from the o to the t. The th pair that follows is the same as in Mother and Father. Get the B and the o bridge right and the rest of the word falls into place.

The joins in Brother
- Br: The capital B has a retraced stem and two bumps, the upper one smaller than the lower. Lift after the lower bump and start the r close beside it. Keep the r small, with a clear shoulder, so the capital leads.
- ro: The r shoulder leads into the o, which starts at the midline. Close the o at the top and give it a short bridge heading into the t.
- ot: The o exits at the midline, so the t begins high and drops straight to the baseline. Do not bring the bridge down to the baseline, or you will get a gap before the t.
- th: The t exits at the baseline and rises into the tall h loop. Cross the t after the word is finished.
- he: The h ends with its hump at the baseline and swings into the e loop. Keep the e small and open.
- er: After the h loop, the e leaves along the baseline and climbs into the final r's shoulder. Finish with a short upturn.
Tricky spots
- The capital B: The B has two bumps of different sizes. If the upper bump is as large as the lower, the B looks like an 8. Keep the upper bump about two thirds of the lower.
- The o to t bridge: The o ends at the midline, and the t begins high. Keep the bridge short and level. A drooping bridge pulls the t out of line.
- The th pair: Make the t short and the h loop tall. Cross the t only at the end, above the midline.
Capitals
Capitalise brother when it is a name or at the start of a sentence. The capital B is a stem with two bumps, and it does not join: lift after the lower bump and start the r just beside it. Lowercase brother is easier, because the b ends with a small checkstroke and joins the r directly.
Variations and styles
For a gift, write brother with a strong slant and a tall B, and underline it with a simple stroke from the final r. A broad-edged pen gives the B and t heavy downstrokes. Matching tattoos can use the same lettering for each brother, with the same slant.
As a tattoo
Brother is long enough that spacing matters. Use at least 2 cm height, leave a clear gap between the t and h, and have the artist keep the bridge from o to t visible. Check the stencil before inking.

Copy-paste versions of Brother
Brother in script is ℬ𝓇ℴ𝓉𝒽ℯ𝓇 and in bold script 𝓑𝓻𝓸𝓽𝓱𝓮𝓻. Regular script borrows three characters here: ℬ (U+212C) for the capital B, ℴ (U+2134) for the o and ℯ (U+212F) for the e, so those letters can look a different weight from 𝓇, 𝓉, 𝒽 and the second 𝓇. Bold script uses one block and stays consistent.
