How to Write Amen in Cursive

By Maya Chen, lettering designer and type educator · Checked by Jordan Hale · · How we review content

"Amen" in Playwrite US Trad, a typeface modelled on traditional school cursive.

Amen is only four letters, and every one of them is a basic cursive building block: an oval capital, a three-hump m, a loop e and a two-hump n. That makes it a very neat word for a prayer card, a small sign or a bookmark, and a good exercise in even humps. There is not much room to hide a mistake, so slow strokes help.

Letter by letter

Each distinct letter in "Amen" has its own stroke-by-stroke page.

The joins in Amen

  • Am: The capital A is an oval followed by a stem, and in school cursive it ends in an undercurve that joins the m. Carry that exit into the m's first hump without lifting. Keep the m about half the A's height so the capital stays dominant.
  • me: After its third hump, the m exits along the baseline and climbs into the e's loop. Make the e small and slanted, and make sure the exit is a smooth undercurve with no wobble.
  • en: The e exits at the baseline and runs into the n's first stroke. Keep the n the same height as the m and finish with a short exit, or a longer swash for a signature look.

Tricky spots

  • m and n counts: The m has three humps and the n has two. In a small word it is easy to write four humps on the m or three on the n, which makes it read as the wrong letter. Count aloud while you write.
  • Closing the A: The capital A's oval must close at the top right before the stem comes down. If it stays open, it reads as a C with a stick. Close the oval, then pull the stem down on the slant.

Capitals

Amen is normally capitalised, since it is an affirmation at the end of a prayer, and the capital A is part of its look. The capital A joins in school cursive: its undercurve exit runs on into the first hump of the m. Some people write amen in lowercase on casual notes, which gives a smooth line from a to m to e to n.

Variations and styles

Amen is often written at the bottom of a prayer card with a small cross or dove. A simple layout is Amen in brush script with a long swash from the n sweeping back underneath. For wall art, pair with grace, faith or blessed. Calligraphers usually thicken the A's stem and the n's downstrokes.

As a tattoo

Amen is a short word, so it works well as a small tattoo on a wrist or behind the ear. Keep letter height at least 6 mm and use lines thick enough to avoid blurring in the m. If you pick a capital A, ask the artist to keep the oval closed so it reads clearly even when small.

Copy-paste versions of Amen

Script amen uses only one Letterlike substitute, ℯ (U+212F) for e, so it looks like 𝒜𝓂ℯ𝓃, with the ℯ occasionally appearing lighter than 𝒜, 𝓂 and 𝓃 depending on your font. Bold script 𝓐𝓶𝓮𝓷 comes from one block with matching strokes, so it is a safer choice for bios and captions.

Amen in cursive: questions

How do I write Amen in cursive?
Make the capital A as an oval plus a stem that ends in an undercurve, run it straight into the m with three humps, then add the e as a small loop and the n with two humps. Keep all three lowercase letters the same height and finish with a short exit.
Does the A connect to the m in Amen?
Yes, in school cursive the capital A joins the next letter. After the oval and stem, the stroke finishes with an undercurve that flows directly into the first hump of the m, so the pen does not lift. If the join looks cramped, shorten the exit and keep the m about half the height of the A.
Should amen be capitalised?
Yes in most uses, since it is a word that ends a prayer and often stands alone as a response. Lowercase is acceptable in a casual caption or inside a sentence such as and everyone said amen, where the word is not a title. On a card or sign, a capital A looks more deliberate.
Is Amen a good small tattoo?
It can be. Choose at least 6 mm letter height, keep the m humps open and avoid hairline strokes that fade over the years. With only four letters, the spacing between the m and the e matters most, so ask for a stencil check before the artist begins and compare it at full size.
