How to Write 3 in Cursive

By Maya Chen, lettering designer and type educator · Checked by Jordan Hale · · How we review content

Digit 3 in Playwrite US Trad (traditional school cursive).

Think of the cursive 3 as two small bumps stacked on one another, the top slightly smaller than the bottom. The curves stay rounded and the ends stay open. When people say a 3 looks wrong it is usually because the top went flat, which makes it look like a Z, or the ends closed up and the digit turned into an 8.

How to write 3

Start: Just below the top line on the left, moving up and right.

  1. 1Start just below the top line on the left and curve up and to the right, then come around and in toward the middle of the digit.
  2. 2Without lifting, curve out to the right again, slightly wider than the first bump, and round the bottom.
  3. 3Finish by curving back to the left and up a little, ending in an open hook that stops short of the middle.
  4. 4Keep both bumps on the same slant as your letters.
  5. 5Lift and leave a gap before the next digit.

Variations between schools and countries

Zaner-Bloser teaches a rounded 3 made of two curves. D'Nealian slants it and gives a slightly larger bottom bump. The flat-topped 3, written like a Z with a tail, is common in parts of Europe and in engineering handwriting, but in the US it can be misread. Some writers finish the 3 with a tiny loop or curl at the end, which is acceptable if the loop stays small. The 3 is among the digits that look nearly alike in hasty writing, so form beats style.

Common mistakes with 3

  • A flat top that turns the 3 into a Z

Round the top stroke into a clear bump. Practise a row of 3s with soft curves, no corners.

  • Closing the ends so it looks like an 8

Leave both ends open. Stop the stroke before it touches the middle.

  • A top bump larger than the bottom

Keep the top the smaller of the two so the digit looks balanced and stable.

  • Starting at the middle and writing a backward E

Always start at the top left and move to the right. The motion should feel like a small wave.

Where you will write 3

A 3 in a date, such as the 3rd, or in a telephone number reads fine in nearly any form, but on cheques the flat-topped version is a risk because someone could alter it. In addresses, a 3 next to an 8 or a 5 is a classic misread, so write the digits with their open ends clearly open. On greeting cards, a rounded 3 in the same slant as the lettering looks neat for an age or anniversary. In tattoos, the 3 is often used for dates and the bottom curve can take a decorative extension.

Copy-paste styles for 3

Unicode has script letters but no script digits, so no copyable 3 is truly cursive. The styled versions you can paste are bold 𝟑, double-struck 𝟛, monospace 𝟹, circled ③, negative circled ❸, superscript ³ and subscript ₃. Roman numeral III is three capital I letters; do not use the circled ③ or a bold 𝟑 where a Roman numeral is meant. Check how a 3 sits beside an 8 or a 5 in the number font generator, and use a script font as an image if you want the rounded handwritten 3.

Cursive 3: questions

How do you make a cursive 3?
Start at the top left, curve up and over to the right, bring the stroke back toward the middle, then make a second, slightly larger curve below it and finish with an open end. Keep both bumps rounded and the same slant as your letters. The ends should not touch the middle.
Why does my 3 look like a Z?
Usually because the top is a straight line. A 3 has a rounded top. Make a small curved bump at the top rather than a horizontal stroke and corner. Some writers do use a flat-topped 3, but it is easily misread, especially in dates and addresses.
Is a flat-topped 3 wrong?
It is not wrong, just a regional or technical habit. In the US, the rounded 3 is taught and flat tops can be misread as a Z or a 7. If a number must be read by many people, such as on a form, the round-topped version is the safer choice.
Is there a cursive 3 to copy and paste?
No script version exists in Unicode. You can copy bold 𝟑, double-struck 𝟛, circled ③ or negative circled ❸, but they are ordinary numbers in other styles. To see a flowing cursive 3 you need an image from a script font.
