How to Write 2 in Cursive

By Maya Chen, lettering designer and type educator · Checked by Jordan Hale · · How we review content

Digit 2 in Playwrite US Trad (traditional school cursive).

The cursive 2 is a curve on top and a choice at the bottom. You swing over the top, sweep down in a long diagonal and finish either on a straight base or with a small loop. The loop is faster and prettier, the straight base is easier to read, and the right pick depends on whether the number is for a card or a cheque.

How to write 2

Start: Just left of the top centre at the top line, heading up and to the right.

  1. 1Start a little left of the top centre and curve up and over to the right, making a round hump.
  2. 2Bring the stroke down and to the left in a smooth diagonal, ending at the baseline on the left.
  3. 3For the straight-base version, turn at the baseline and draw a line straight across to the right.
  4. 4For the looped version, make a small loop at the lower left, then sweep right along the baseline in a rolling stroke.
  5. 5Lift the pen and leave a gap before the next digit.

Variations between schools and countries

The 2 is taught with a straight base in Zaner-Bloser and D'Nealian print-like numerals, and the looped base is common in older and more flowing cursive. In some European hands the 2 has a small loop at the lower left, or the diagonal is replaced with a gentle S-curve. Wide, flat-topped 2s that look like a lowercase z occur in rushed writing. Where accuracy matters, the straight base is the safe choice.

Common mistakes with 2

  • A flat or pointed top that makes the 2 look like a Z

Round the top into a clear hump before the diagonal. A 2 curves; a Z has corners.

  • A loop at the bottom so big it looks like an 8 or a 6

Keep the loop small and low, and the base stroke long enough to finish the digit.

  • Letting the diagonal bend or wobble

Pull the diagonal in one steady stroke from the right side of the hump down to the bottom left.

  • Writing the base shorter than the hump

The base should reach about as far right as the top curve. A stub makes the 2 look unfinished.

Where you will write 2

A 2 appears in two of the most-written things in handwriting, the year (20xx) and every month and day with a 2. On cheques the straight base is safer, since a loop can be extended into another digit. On cards and invitations, the looped version gives a graceful look for a number like 21 or 2nd. In tattoos, a looped 2 in a script style is among the most popular choices for dates because of its flowing base.

Copy-paste styles for 2

Unicode has script letters but no script digits, so no copyable 2 is truly cursive. The styled versions you can paste are bold 𝟐, double-struck 𝟚, monospace 𝟸, circled ②, negative circled ❷, superscript ² and subscript ₂. The superscript ² is also the square symbol, so use it for powers such as m² rather than as a decorative digit in names. Type a whole date such as 22 or 2026 into the number font generator to compare how the 2 sits beside other digits; a looped script 2 has to come from a font image.

Cursive 2: questions

How do you write a 2 in cursive?
Start at the top, curve over to the right, sweep down diagonally to the bottom left, and finish with a base that runs along the baseline to the right. You can make the base straight or add a small loop where the diagonal meets it. The rest of the digit stays the same either way.
Should a cursive 2 have a loop?
Either works. A loop at the lower left is quicker and more flowing, while a straight base is clearer and harder to alter on a cheque or form. Most school models teach the straight base first and treat the loop as an optional flourish for confident writers.
Why does my 2 look like a Z?
Probably because the top is flat or has a corner. A 2 begins with a round hump, then the diagonal. If your top is angular, practise curving up and over before the diagonal. A slight slant to match your letters helps tell them apart as well.
Can I copy a cursive-looking 2?
Unicode has no script digit 2, so copy-paste versions are bold 𝟐, double-struck 𝟚, circled ② and similar. If you want the looped cursive shape, use a handwriting font and export the number as an image rather than text. An image cannot be searched or read aloud, so keep the plain digit nearby when the number matters, such as in a date or price.
