G in Bubble Letters

By Maya Chen, lettering designer and type educator · Checked by Jordan Hale · · How we review content

Capital G
Lowercase g

Rendered in the Bagel Fat One typeface, an open-source font. It is a reference shape, not a hand-drawn letter.

G starts as a C and ends as something more complicated, because it adds a short horizontal spur on the right that turns the opening into a shelf. The lowercase g is the largest challenge in this group, since its tail hangs below the baseline and needs space. Plan the vertical room before you start and both forms become manageable.

How to draw a bubble capital G

  1. 1Draw a C-shaped arc with an opening on the upper right, a bit smaller than you would leave for a plain C.
  2. 2Add the spur: a short horizontal line from the lower terminal pointing inward, at about the middle height of the letter.
  3. 3Inflate the arc and the spur into one tube, so the spur reads as a stubby tongue rather than a separate stroke.
  4. 4Round the spur's end into a semicircle, and make the inner corner where it meets the curve a soft bend.
  5. 5Erase the skeleton, then shade under the spur, where the shadow falls inside the letter's mouth.

Tip: Draw the spur shorter than your instinct suggests. A long spur blocks the opening and G begins to look like a G-clef squiggle.

How to draw a bubble lowercase g

  1. 1Draw the single-story form: a circle at x-height with a vertical stem on its right that runs below the baseline.
  2. 2Curl the bottom of the stem into a hook toward the left, leaving a gap between the hook's tip and the bowl above.
  3. 3Inflate the circle and the stem as one tube and make the hook end in a rounded cap.
  4. 4Draw the bowl's hole as a circle slightly left of centre, and the loop's opening as a narrow crescent.
  5. 5Erase the pencil, shade the underside of the hook and add a highlight on the upper left of the bowl.

Tip: Rule a light descender line a bowl-height below the baseline before you start. The tail needs that much room, and without it the hook gets squashed against the next line.

What makes G awkward or easy

G is awkward because it has an open mouth and a spur, which means two terminals competing in a small area. The spur can close the opening or crash into the curve, and the inner shape becomes a narrow channel. The lowercase g adds a descender, a hook that must be big enough to read but not so big that it collides with letters beneath on the next line.

Variations

A graffiti G often fills the mouth with a small round bubble to make a heavy, cartoon look. In a kid-friendly version the spur becomes a smiling tongue. You can also draw the lowercase g with a double-story shape, with a loop on the tail, though it takes extra space. Outline-only versions leave the descender loop white.

Common mistakes with bubble G

  • The spur is long and closes the opening.

Cut the spur back until a clear gap remains between its top edge and the upper terminal of the curve.

  • The G looks like a C with a stray line.

Inflate the spur together with the arc so they share one outline, then round the inner angle where they meet.

  • The descender of the lowercase g is cut off by the next line.

Leave extra vertical space below the baseline, or draw the word on every second ruled line.

  • The tail hook is thinner than the bowl.

Check the hook's thickness against the bowl wall with your pen tip, and enlarge it until they match.

Ideas for bubble G

G suits Grace, George and Gita, and a big bubble G with a face looks like a ghost or a gumball. For a wall display, the lowercase g with a long hook can hold a hanging star or a fishing line. A monogram with G is easy to read, since the spur is a clear marker even at a small size.

Bubble G you can copy and paste

Ⓖ and ⓖ are the circled forms, and 🅖 is the black-circled capital only. A circled lowercase ⓖ cannot show any descender, so the tail you work hardest at when drawing disappears entirely in the Unicode version.

Bubble G: questions

How do you draw a bubble letter G?
Draw a C-shaped arc with a small spur at the lower right pointing inward. Inflate both into a single tube, round the spur's end and keep a clear opening above it. Outline, erase and add shading under the spur so it looks like a tongue.
What does a lowercase bubble g look like?
Usually a single-story g: a round bowl with a stem on its right that drops below the baseline and curls left into a hook. The hook ends in a rounded cap and leaves a small gap under the bowl. Leave space beneath the line so the tail has room.
How big should the spur on a bubble G be?
Short, roughly the width of the stroke. It points inward from the lower terminal and ends in a round cap. If it is longer, it shuts the mouth of the letter and the G looks closed. A short spur keeps the shape open and readable.
How do I draw the tail of a lowercase g?
Draw a stem down from the right of the bowl, past the baseline, and curl it into a hook toward the left. Inflate it at the same thickness as the bowl. Keep a gap between the hook and the bowl so the two do not merge.
