F in Bubble Letters

By Maya Chen, lettering designer and type educator · Checked by Jordan Hale · · How we review content

Capital F
Lowercase f

Rendered in the Bagel Fat One typeface, an open-source font. It is a reference shape, not a hand-drawn letter.

F is E without a bottom arm, and that missing foot makes it surprisingly tricky: the letter feels lopsided unless the arms are balanced. The lowercase f is harder still, a tall stem that curls over at the top with a crossbar cutting through it. These are the shapes where an outline most often looks clumsy, so take them slowly.

How to draw a bubble capital F

  1. 1Draw a vertical stem and two arms on its right, one at the top and a shorter one at about the middle.
  2. 2Make the top arm the longer of the two, and leave a generous gap between them so the slot between arms stays open.
  3. 3Inflate the stem with a rounded base, since it has no foot to hide the end of the tube.
  4. 4Cap both arms with semicircles and round the corner where the top arm leaves the stem.
  5. 5Outline, erase the skeleton, and give the stem's lower part a darker tone so the letter has some weight at the bottom.

Tip: Because F has no bottom bar, add a visible round foot to the stem. A simple semicircle at the base anchors the letter and stops it from looking like a leaning post.

How to draw a bubble lowercase f

  1. 1Draw a tall vertical line and curve its top toward the right, like the handle of a walking cane.
  2. 2Add a short horizontal crossbar at x-height that extends left and right of the stem by about the same distance.
  3. 3Inflate the stem and hook into one tube, keeping the curve of the hook as round as the top of an umbrella handle.
  4. 4Join the crossbar to the stem with soft inner curves so the two do not leave sharp notches.
  5. 5Erase the guide lines and shade the underside of the hook and the right side of the stem.

Tip: Draw the hook with a compass-like arc, not a sharp bend. A good hook is about one stroke width above the stem's top edge and curves down only slightly.

What makes F awkward or easy

The capital F has two arms of different lengths and no base, so the balance depends on proportions. If the arms are too fat they merge into a block, and if the stem is too thin the whole letter tips right. The lowercase f combines curl and crossbar, and the crossbar crosses the stem exactly where the outline is already crowded. Of all the letters in this range, lowercase f is the one that most often needs a second try.

Variations

A bubbly graffiti F sometimes turns the middle arm into a small round blob that sticks out like a tongue. The lowercase f is a favourite for ribbons: the hook becomes a loop that carries a bow. A cutesy outline F uses very thick strokes and a tiny hole. In 3D, shade the top arm's underside, since it casts the strongest shadow.

Common mistakes with bubble F

  • The two arms merge into one big flap.

Pull the arms apart in the skeleton, and keep the slot between them at least a stroke wide after inflation.

  • The stem ends in a flat cut at the bottom.

Cap it with a round foot, the same width as the stem, so the letter looks inflated all the way down.

  • The lowercase f hook is a sharp bend.

Draw the curve as part of a circle and inflate it evenly. Erase any corner and redraw the arc smoothly.

  • The lowercase crossbar is longer on one side only.

Centre the bar on the stem so it extends the same distance left and right. Test with a ruler before inking.

Ideas for bubble F

F is a good initial for Fiona, Finn and Farah, and for the word FUN on a party sign. Bubble lowercase f is the letter to use in a word such as fish, where the hook can double as the top of a tail. In a monogram, the open space under the middle arm is a convenient spot for a smaller initial or small star.

Ⓕ and ⓕ are the circled letters for F, and 🅕 is the filled capital (there is no black-circled lowercase). In a ring, F loses its characteristic open shape, so a circled F looks surprisingly like a different letter at small sizes.

Bubble F: questions

How do you draw a bubble letter F?
Draw a vertical stem with a long arm at the top and a shorter one at the middle. Inflate all three parts into rounded tubes, cap the arms with semicircles and give the stem a round foot. Keep the slot between the arms open, then outline, erase and shade.
What does a lowercase bubble f look like?
A tall rounded stem that hooks over to the right at the top, with a crossbar through it at x-height. The hook should be a smooth arc, not a corner. The crossbar is centred on the stem and has rounded ends, like a small pillow.
Why is a bubble F hard to inflate?
It has no bottom bar to balance it, and the two arms leave only a narrow slot. After outlining, the arms often fuse and the stem looks unstable. Widen the gap in the skeleton and add a round foot, and the letter stands up better.
How long should the arms of a bubble F be?
Make the top arm about as long as the letter is wide, and the middle arm roughly two thirds of that. The difference gives the F its shape. If both arms are equal, the letter starts to look like a rounded E with its foot missing.
