What a TikTok bio is for

A TikTok bio is a very short caption for your whole account. Visitors usually land on it after one video they liked, and they decide in a few seconds whether to follow. The best bios answer three questions quickly: who is this, what do they post, and when should I come back?

Everything else is decoration. Styled letters, symbols and emoji give personality, but they do not replace a clear sentence. If you have room for only one idea, use it to say what your videos are about.

Length and line breaks

The limit is 80 characters: TikTok’s help center says bios cannot exceed 80. The edit screen shows a counter as you type. Everything counts: letters, spaces, emoji and line breaks. Styled Unicode letters usually count as one character each, though a few symbols may use more room than they appear to.

With so little space, the best bios are short sentences or fragments. Many of the ideas above are under 50 characters, which leaves room to personalise them.

Choice Effect on length Tip
Plain words Cheapest Say the most with the fewest words
Emoji One or two characters each Use one, not five
Styled letters Same count, harder to read Style a heading only
Line breaks One character each Use at most two
Separators ( | ) One character plus spaces Cheaper than a long phrase

Make it do a job

Choose one goal per bio: gain followers, sell something, show your personality or point to a link. A bio with five goals reads like noise. If you sell something, state what and where. If you post a certain topic, name it. If you post on a schedule, say the days.

A handy formula is: identity, topic, action. For example: “Plant shop in Leeds, new stock every Thursday”. That is a place, a thing and a rhythm in six words.

Using fancy text well

Styled text works best in small doses:

  • Style the first few words as a label, then use plain letters.
  • Use one style in the whole bio. Mixing three looks messy.
  • Check the result on a phone, not a computer. Some characters look different on small screens.
  • Keep search words, such as your niche or city, in plain letters. Search does not reliably match styled letters.
  • Skip styling for links, numbers and contact details.

If you need a style, the TikTok fonts page has a generator that fits the bio and name fields. For decorations such as sparkles and brackets, use the text decorator.

Accessibility

Screen readers often announce styled letters by their Unicode name or read them one at a time, which turns a bio into a string of noise. People with dyslexia may also find decorative letters hard to read. So keep the essential information in plain text, and use styling only as seasoning. Our guide to fancy text accessibility goes into more depth, and the character limits guide explains how limits count different symbols.

Which style for which account

Account type Style that suits Why
Aesthetic and lifestyle Small caps, cursive Soft and tidy
Funny Bold sans for one phrase Emphasis without clutter
Gaming Gothic or monospace Fits the genre
Shops and services Plain, or bold for one word Trust and clarity
Students and everyday Plain with an emoji Friendly and easy

Updating your bio

Treat your bio like a billboard that you can change. Update it when you launch a product, start a series, reach a milestone or change your posting schedule. A stale bio (“new video Fridays” when you post on Mondays) loses trust. Check it every month or so.

If you are not sure which version works better, try one for a couple of weeks, look at your follower numbers and profile views, then swap. Avoid changing too often, because it is hard to tell what made the difference.

Make it yours

Every line above is a template. Replace the topic, place and schedule first, then adjust the tone. A bio that sounds like you attracts the right people. Avoid copying a line that is identical to hundreds of other profiles, because a common line makes you blend into the crowd. Frequently asked questions

How many characters can a TikTok bio have?
80 characters. TikTok's help center says bios cannot exceed 80 characters. Spaces, emoji and line breaks all count, and some styled symbols may use more room than they appear to, so watch the counter in the Edit profile screen as you paste.
Can I use fancy fonts in my TikTok bio?
Yes, pasted Unicode generally displays in the bio and in the name field. It does not work in your @username, which only accepts plain characters. Styled letters can be hard to read for some people and are not searchable like plain text, so style a short phrase and keep key words plain.
How do I add line breaks to a TikTok bio?
On the phone app, tap Return while editing and the line break stays in most versions. If it does not, write the bio in a notes app, copy it with the breaks and paste it in. Each break counts as a character, and short lines use less of an already small limit.
What should a TikTok bio say?
Who you are, what you post and what to do next, in as few words as possible. Examples: "Plant shop in Leeds, new stock Thursdays" tells people what to expect. A single call to action, such as "link below", works better than three vague ones.
Can I copy these bios exactly?
Yes. They are original, so copy and edit. Swap in your own city, hobby or schedule so it sounds like you. Keep the character count in mind when your words are longer than the ones in the example, and trim until it fits.
Do styled bios hurt accessibility or search?
They can. Screen readers may read styled letters one at a time, and search does not reliably match them to plain letters. Put your name, job or topic in plain text and use styled text for decoration. Our accessibility guide has more detail.
