Lightning bolts

Single characters that look like a lightning bolt.

Storm and weather

Cloud and storm marks that include lightning.

Power and energy

Emoji that stand for electricity.

Bolt lines

Strings of several characters. Labels are plain descriptions.

22 symbols on this page. Names are the official Unicode character names; "emoji" marks characters that often appear as colour pictures on phones.

A bolt from four different places

There is no single lightning bolt in Unicode, and the bolts you see in names and bios come from four unrelated places. ⚡ (HIGH VOLTAGE SIGN) is the most widely used and is an emoji that came from a safety sign for dangerous voltage. ϟ is a Greek letter, koppa, whose glyph in many fonts has a zigzag shape. ↯ (DOWNWARDS ZIGZAG ARROW) is a technical arrow, and ☇ (LIGHTNING) is an old symbol from the Miscellaneous Symbols block, grouped with ☈ (THUNDERSTORM). Each has a different style, colour behaviour and set of side effects.

The names tell you how they were meant to be used. ⚡ signals danger or energy, ϟ is part of a writing system, ↯ is a diagram or logic mark and ☇ is a weather-related sign. None of them was designed as a “cool username decoration”, but all have been repurposed.

⚡ the emoji

⚡ is the one with the strongest recognition. It is always a colour emoji on phones, usually yellow, and it follows no text colour. It is accepted in most social profiles. It is not accepted in every game, because some filters only allow text characters. It is the right choice for energy, speed and electricity topics, and also for a sudden or exciting tone.

⚡ comes with a nuance: the phrase “high voltage” is the official name, so a screen reader will announce it that way. Some readers say “high voltage sign” and others say “lightning”.

ϟ and the flat bolt

ϟ is GREEK SMALL LETTER KOPPA, an archaic letter that stood for a number in the Greek numeral system. Its glyph, in many fonts, resembles a bolt, and that resemblance made it a fixture of gaming names. Its advantage is that it takes the text colour and does not turn into an emoji. Its drawbacks:

  • A screen reader reads it as “Greek small letter koppa”.
  • It requires a font that includes Greek, which almost every system has.
  • Two ϟ side by side can look like the runic SS insignia of Nazi Germany. That is a reason to use one bolt only, and not two next to each other, or to choose ⚡ instead. Many platforms moderate this, and an accidental resemblance in a username can still lead to a flag.

↯ gives a similar flat look with a different design, an angular zigzag with an arrowhead. In logic, it signals contradiction, but few people read it that way in a name. ☇ is a thin, diagonal bolt, and ⌁ (ELECTRIC ARROW) draws a zigzag arrow used in electrical diagrams.

Storm and power marks

The second group is made of weather marks. ☈ (THUNDERSTORM) is the text form, and 🌩 (CLOUD WITH LIGHTNING) and ⛈ (THUNDER CLOUD AND RAIN) are colour emoji. They suit weather updates and dramatic captions. The third group, with 🔋 (BATTERY), 🔌 (ELECTRIC PLUG) and 💥 (COLLISION SYMBOL), covers power and impact for tech and fitness content. 🪫 (LOW BATTERY) is a recent emoji, so older devices may show a box.

Which bolt to pick

Situation Choice Reason
Recognisable on any phone ⚡ Emoji, near-universal
Flat bolt that follows text colour ϟ or ↯ Plain text characters
Decorative thin bolt ☇ Slim, diagonal
Storm or weather post 🌩 or ☈ Cloud and lightning

Typing a bolt

  1. Word. Type 26A1 and press Alt then X for ⚡. Use 3DF for ϟ, 21AF for ↯, and 2607 for ☇.
  2. Windows emoji panel. Press the Windows key and period, then search lightning or high voltage.
  3. Mac. Open the Character Viewer from Control, Command and Space and search lightning.
  4. iPhone and Android. Search the emoji keyboard for high voltage. To type ϟ, add a Greek keyboard and look for koppa, or copy it from this page.
  5. Text replacement. On iOS and macOS, a shortcut like “bolt” can expand to ⚡.

There are no standard Windows Alt codes for any of these characters.

Accessibility

A string of bolts is read one by one, and ϟ is announced as a Greek letter, which can confuse someone listening. If the bolt is only decoration, put it after the name, and use one. For emoji, screen readers speak the standard name (“high voltage”), which is clear. The fancy text accessibility guide goes through how names are spoken.

Compatibility notes

⚡ is covered by emoji fonts on essentially every modern device. ϟ and ↯ are in most system fonts but may be missing from minimal ones, giving a box. If a bolt turns into a box on your device, this explanation of missing glyphs applies. For other pointed decoration, see star symbols, sparkle symbols and arrow symbols.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between ⚡ and ϟ?
⚡ is HIGH VOLTAGE SIGN (U+26A1), an emoji that is always shown in colour on phones. ϟ is GREEK SMALL LETTER KOPPA (U+03DF), a letter whose shape resembles a lightning bolt, so it is used as a flat, text-coloured bolt. Pick ⚡ for colour and ϟ for a monochrome look.
Are there any problems with using ϟ in a username?
ϟ is a Greek letter, so a screen reader will announce it as koppa, and some spellchecks treat it as a foreign word. Double bolts can also resemble the SS insignia used by Nazi Germany, so a name with two or more lightning marks side by side may be misread or flagged. Use one bolt, or ⚡.
What is the Alt code for a lightning bolt?
There is no Alt code for it. In Word, type 26A1 and press Alt then X for ⚡, or 3DF for ϟ. On a Mac use the Character Viewer from Control, Command and Space. On phones, search the emoji keyboard for high voltage or lightning.
Is ⚡ safe to use in game names?
Often yes, but each game decides what it accepts and most do not publish a list. ⚡ is an emoji, and games that allow only text symbols may reject it, where ϟ or ↯ may be accepted. Test the name in the game, and check how it looks after saving.
What does the ↯ symbol mean?
↯ is DOWNWARDS ZIGZAG ARROW (U+21AF). In mathematics and logic, it is often used for a contradiction. In decorative use it simply looks like a bolt. It is a text character and is not turned into an emoji, which makes it a reliable flat bolt.
