"Sofia" in Playwrite US Trad, a typeface modelled on traditional school cursive.

Sofia is five letters with one difficult shape: the cursive f, which has a tall loop above the line and a second loop below it. That makes the name span all three zones, and the f must be neat enough that the i and a after it are still clear. The capital S, like in Sophia, is drawn from the bottom up and doesn't join.

Letter by letter

Each distinct letter in "Sofia" has its own stroke-by-stroke page.

The joins in Sofia

  • So: After lifting, begin the o just beside the S's curl. Close the o on the right and leave by its bridge at the midline, since the f that follows starts high.
  • of: The o's bridge rises into the f's tall upstroke. Climb steadily to the top line, loop back, and come straight down through the line, so the f has a clean upper loop.
  • fi: The f's lower loop crosses at the baseline and exits to the right into the i. Keep the lower loop narrow and the exit short, so the i's upstroke doesn't start too far away.
  • ia: After the i's downstroke, curve into the a's oval and close it. Dot the i later, directly above its stem, and finish with a short exit.

Tricky spots

  • The cursive f: The f needs a loop above the line and a loop below, crossing at the baseline. If the lower loop is missing, the f is hard to tell from an l or a t, and Sofia can read as Solia.
  • Looped capital S: The capital S climbs from the baseline into a loop. Practise the loop alone first. If it is too small it looks like a plain 8, and if it is too wide it collides with the o.
  • Dot on the i: The i sits between the f's lower loop and the a. Put its dot directly above the stem, after finishing the name, or it can be mistaken for part of the f.

The capital S

Capital S starts on the baseline, climbs to a tall loop and then curves down and back left, ending in a small curl. In traditional cursive it does not connect, so lift after the curl and start the o beside it. Keep the capital about twice the lowercase height.

Sofia as a signature

The S and the f both have loops, so a signature of Sofia can feel very ornate with little effort. Let the S be large and the f's lower loop long, and keep the i and a modest. A flourish should leave the f's loops clear, since they are the identifying feature. A simpler signature can be S, o and a tall f with the rest shortened.

Short forms of Sofia

A common short form is Sofi, but most people use Sofia in full. Sofi drops the final a and ends on a dotted i, which is a small change but reduces the width.

As a tattoo

Sofia is a good choice for a collarbone or wrist tattoo, but the f's loops need space; use at least 8 mm x-height and a stencil, so the artist can see how the lower loop will fall. Avoid making the f's lower loop tiny, since it fills in first.

Copy-paste versions of Sofia

Copy-paste Sofia in script is 𝒮ℴ𝒻𝒾𝒶 and in bold script is 𝓢𝓸𝓯𝓲𝓪. The o is the only borrowed letter in plain-script Sofia, written ℴ (U+2134). The cursive-looking 𝒻 for f is a regular script character, not a substitute, so the name has just one odd glyph in second position. If the o seems lighter than the f beside it, use the bold script version.

Sofia in cursive: questions

How do you write Sofia in cursive?
Draw a looped capital S, lift, then write o, f, i, a in one connected run. The f has a tall loop above the line and a loop below it. Dot the i after the name is finished and close the final a.
How do you write the f in Sofia in cursive?
Start on the baseline, rise to the top line, loop back and come down straight through the baseline, then loop to the left and cross the stem. Exit to the right into the next letter. In Sofia the f arrives after the o, so the o's bridge feeds the upstroke, and the lower loop stays narrow so the i is not pushed away.
Does the S connect to the o in Sofia?
In traditional cursive, no. The capital S is finished and lifted before the o, so a small gap is normal. Begin the o just beside the S's curl and close it on the right. Some modern styles join them with a short stroke, but that is a variation, and it can crowd the tall f that follows.
How is Sofia different from Sophia in cursive?
Sofia uses a cursive f, which has loops above and below the line, while Sophia uses p and h, which give a descender and a tall loop. The capital S and the ia ending are the same, so the two names differ only in the middle. Sofia is also one letter shorter, which makes it a bit more compact.
