"Lucas" in Playwrite US Trad, a typeface modelled on traditional school cursive.

Lucas is one of the friendlier names to write: the capital connects, and the lowercase letters are all simple shapes. The challenge is that u, c, a and s are all small round-ish letters, so they can start to look alike. Clear shapes and even spacing do the work here.

Letter by letter

Each distinct letter in "Lucas" has its own stroke-by-stroke page.

The joins in Lucas

  • Lu: The L exit climbs into the u, which has two rounded valleys at the baseline and pointed tops at the midline, ending with a short downstroke on the right.
  • uc: The u finishes its last downstroke at the baseline and exits along it. The c starts at the midline with a small curve that goes counter-clockwise. Do not close it.
  • ca: From the c, a short exit leads to the a. Make a closed oval and retrace the right side down. The c and a should be about the same height.
  • as: The a exits at the baseline into the s, a small rising stroke with a tiny tail. Keep it at the height of the u.

Tricky spots

  • u vs. rounded n: The u has pointed tops and rounded bottoms, while the n is the reverse, with a rounded arch on top. If the tops of your u are rounded, it reads as an n.
  • Open c: The c should stay open at the right. A closed c turns into an o.
  • Small s: Keep the s at the same height as the other lowercase letters so it does not turn into an l.

The capital L

The traditional capital L is a big looped stroke that swings down to the baseline and finishes with a curl. It connects, so the curl leads right into the u. The most common problem is making the capital too tall, which leaves the u dwarfed. Aim for about twice the height of the lowercase letters.

Lucas as a signature

Lucas can carry a bold L with a big loop, then compress the ucas into a smooth wave. Keep the u cup-shaped and the a closed so the middle does not turn into a flat line. End the s with a rising flick if you like.

Short forms of Lucas

Luke and Luca are sometimes used, but they are different spellings rather than simple abbreviations. In cursive they change the middle letters, so check the spelling you need before choosing.

As a tattoo

Because the lowercase letters are small and similar, ask for a slightly larger size so the u and the open c stay distinct. A moderate L loop heals better than a very large one.

Copy-paste versions of Lucas

Script ℒ𝓊𝒸𝒶𝓈 and bold script 𝓛𝓾𝓬𝓪𝓼 are generated by code from the Unicode mathematical script blocks, so you can paste either one anywhere that accepts Unicode text. The L is the only substitute in plain-script Lucas, written ℒ (U+2112), while u, c, a and s are all standard script characters. A name this size fits any username box, so the only decision is which weight you prefer. Choose bold script if the capital looks out of step with the lowercase letters on your screen.

Lucas in cursive: questions

How do you write Lucas in cursive?
Write a looped capital L that ends with a curl, join into a u with pointed tops, then an open c, a closed a and a small s. All five letters connect, so you can write the name in one stroke if you like. The u is two pointed tops with a rounded bottom, so a curved top is the usual mistake.
Does the L connect to the u?
Yes. In traditional cursive, capital L ends with a rising curl that goes straight into the next lowercase letter. No lift is needed between L and u. The tops are pointed and the bottom is rounded, like a cup. Practise a row of u shapes before the full name.
Why does my cursive Lucas look like Lncas?
The top of your u has become rounded, so it reads as an n. Make the u with two pointed tops and a rounded bottom between them, so it holds water like a cup. The right downstroke should end at the baseline.
