T in Different Fonts

T is the second most common letter in English and started as a simple Phoenician mark. Its flipped form borrows the math symbol for perpendicular. Every styled T is below.

A mark that became a cross

The Phoenician taw meant “mark” or “sign,” and it was drawn like one: a simple + or ×, the kind of mark you make to sign or tally something. Greek straightened it into tau, Τ, by moving the crossbar to the top. Latin took that shape as T unchanged.

Greek and Cyrillic both still use the same capital shape, Τ and Т, so T is one of the letters that crosses scripts without changing at all. That is useful for travellers reading signs and risky for usernames.

T has no gaps anywhere in the math alphabets, so every script, gothic and outline T comes from the same block as its neighbours. You won’t see the mismatched glyphs that affect R, H or lowercase o.

The flipped T

Upside-down T is where things get interesting. A lowercase t flips to ʇ, the IPA symbol for the dental click, the tutting sound English speakers write as “tsk.” The capital becomes ⊥, the up tack from Mathematical Operators, which means “perpendicular to” in geometry and “false” in logic. Neither is a novelty character, so a screen reader will read them as what they are, not as T. The upside-down text generator uses both.

Mirroring T does nothing, since it is symmetric left to right. That makes it a safe letter in mirrored words.

Decorative T forms

  • Currency: ₮, the Mongolian tögrög sign
  • Asian style: ㄒ, a Bopomofo letter used to teach Mandarin pronunciation
  • Katakana style: イ, the halfwidth katakana i
  • Cherokee style: Ͳ, an archaic Greek letter
  • Hooked: Ƭ, a Latin T with a hook

These are real letters in other writing systems. They look like T to an English reader and like something else entirely to people who read those scripts.

T in names and monograms

With a frequency of about 9.1%, T appears in a huge share of names, so it is also one of the letters you’ll style most often in a full word. Its simple crossbar makes it one of the most legible letters in heavy styles: 𝕿 in bold gothic and 🆃 in black squares stay readable where curvier letters blur. For a monogram, T’s flat top works well as the centre letter, holding up the initials on either side.

To learn the handwritten version, see the cursive T lesson. If you want to style a whole sentence of T-heavy text, the bold text generator keeps the crossbar crisp, and the accessibility guide explains how screen readers announce styled letters.

T in different fonts: questions

What character is an upside-down T?
Upside-down generators use ⊥ (U+22A5, UP TACK), a mathematical symbol for 'perpendicular' in geometry and 'false' in logic. Unicode has no turned capital T letter in common fonts, so this symbol stands in. The lowercase flips to ʇ (U+0287), an IPA letter for the dental click, the sound often written tsk.
Why is T so common in English?
T makes up about 9.1% of letters in English text, second only to E. The single word 'the' is the most frequent word in English, and very common words like to, that, it and with all contain a t. The th pair is also one of the most frequent letter combinations in the language.
Can I use the Greek or Cyrillic T in a username?
Τ (Greek Tau, U+03A4) and Т (Cyrillic Te, U+0422) look identical to a Latin T but are different characters. A name using them won't match the plain spelling in search, and many platforms treat mixed-script names as a spoofing signal. A math-alphabet T such as 𝐓 or 𝓣 is a safer choice.
Is there a small caps T and a tiny T?
Yes, T is well covered. Small caps ᴛ (U+1D1B) comes from Phonetic Extensions. Superscript has both ᵗ and ᵀ, and subscript ₜ (U+209C) is one of only 17 subscript letters Unicode provides. So small, tiny and subscript text all handle T without substitutes.
