R in Different Fonts
R is the letter most likely to look slightly off in fancy text: its script, Fraktur and double-struck capitals all come from an older Unicode block than their neighbours.

The head that grew a leg
R traces back to the Phoenician resh, meaning “head,” drawn as a head in profile. Greek turned it into rho and gave it the shape Ρ. When the Romans adopted it, that shape clashed with their P, so they added a diagonal leg. That leg is the whole difference between R and P, and it is the part type designers spend the most time on.
The old shape didn’t disappear. Greek still writes rho as Ρ and Cyrillic writes its r as Р, which is why a P lookalike in a username is often an R in another script.
Three borrowed capitals
When Unicode first encoded letters for mathematics, a handful went into the Letterlike Symbols block (U+2100–214F). The later Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block left holes for them instead of duplicating them. R and H are the only letters with three borrowed capitals:
| Style | R | Code point | Math meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| Script | ℛ | U+211B | no single standard meaning |
| Fraktur | ℜ | U+211C | real part of a complex number |
| Double-struck | ℝ | U+211D | the real numbers |
Next door you’ll also find ℞ (U+211E, PRESCRIPTION TAKE), the pharmacist’s Rx sign built from an R with a crossed tail.
In practice this means the script, gothic and outline R may be drawn by a different font than the lowercase letters beside it. Depending on the fonts installed, the difference ranges from invisible to a slightly different weight or slant. Bold script 𝓡 𝓻 and bold gothic 𝕽 𝖗 avoid the issue completely because their alphabets have no gaps. Our Old English text generator uses both Fraktur sets so you can compare ℜ with 𝕽.
Small, tiny and flipped R
- Small caps: ʀ, an IPA symbol for the uvular trill. It renders almost everywhere.
- Superscript: ʳ (from Spacing Modifier Letters) and ᴿ (from Phonetic Extensions), so a tiny R mixes two blocks.
- Subscript: ᵣ, one of the 17 subscript letters Unicode has.
- Upside down: r becomes ɹ (U+0279), the IPA symbol for the ordinary English r sound. Capital R borrows ꓤ from the Lisu script.
- Mirror: Я, the Cyrillic ya.
The upside-down ɹ is a nice coincidence: it is not a novelty glyph but the character linguists use to transcribe the r in “red.”
R in English text
R makes up about 6.0% of English letters, in the top ten. It’s also a common ending through -er and -or, so styling it with a glyph that sits awkwardly on the line, such as the Lisu ꓤ, is very visible across a sentence.
Choosing an R for a name or logo
The leg of the R gives a monogram movement. Script ℛ and bold script 𝓡 have a long sweeping leg that works as a flourish. Outline ℝ is crisp and geometric for a tech-style handle. The squared 🅁 and black square 🆁 read as badges and do not turn into emoji, unlike 🅾 and 🅿.
For the handwritten version, the cursive R lesson shows how the capital’s loop and leg are formed by hand. To check how a styled R reads aloud, see the fancy text accessibility guide.
