M in Different Fonts
Copy any M below. M started as a picture of water, its script capital was a currency sign before it was a letter style, and its bubble form doubles as the Metro emoji.

From water to M
The Phoenician letter mem meant “water” and was drawn as a wavy line, a row of zigzag peaks. Greek turned it into mu (Μ), and the Romans settled it into the symmetrical M with four strokes. The waves are still there if you look at a cursive m, which is three humps joined together.
Two later uses of M are worth knowing. In Roman numerals, M is 1,000 (from the Latin mille), and Unicode keeps a separate Ⅿ (U+216F) for compatibility. And lowercase m is one of the widest letters in most fonts, which matters in styled text: a word like “mammal” in a wide style runs long fast.
Script M was a currency sign
M is one of the eleven letters the math script alphabet borrows from the Letterlike Symbols block:
| Style | Capital | Lowercase | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cursive script | ℳ | 𝓂 | ℳ (U+2133) borrowed; once the German mark sign |
| Bold cursive | 𝓜 | 𝓶 | Both native |
| Bold gothic | 𝕸 | 𝖒 | Ornate Fraktur M |
| Double-struck | 𝕄 | 𝕞 | Native |
| Monospace | 𝙼 | 𝚖 | Same width as i, by design |
Because ℳ comes from an older part of the font, it can look a different weight from 𝒶 or 𝓇. If your name starts with M (Maria, Michael, Mia), bold cursive 𝓜 matches better, and the cursive text generator lets you compare the two side by side. The handwritten cursive M, with its three humps and an entry loop, is on the cursive M page.
The Metro emoji problem
Bubble text turns M into Ⓜ (U+24C2), and that character has an emoji form, used for metro and underground signs. Many apps show it as a coloured Ⓜ️ badge, even when every other letter in a bubble word is a plain outline. The bubble text generator also offers:
- ⓜ (lowercase circled m), which has no emoji form
- 🅜 (black bubble M), monochrome
- 🄼 (squared M) and 🅼 (black square M), neither of which is an emoji
So M joins A, B, O and P as letters where a single styled character can unexpectedly switch to colour.
Small M’s
M has every small form:
- Small caps ᴍ (U+1D0D), from Phonetic Extensions.
- Superscript ᴹ (U+1D39) and ᵐ (U+1D50).
- Subscript ₘ (U+2098), one of the 17 letters with a subscript.
M in the symbol styles
Several look-alike alphabets leave M almost or entirely unchanged, because M is distinctive and hard to imitate:
- Greek style, hooked style and accented style: all use a plain M.
- Currency: ₥ is the mill sign (U+20A5), a thousandth of a dollar, once used in US accounting.
- 爪 (Asian style) is the Chinese character for “claw”.
- ᄊ (katakana style) isn’t katakana at all: it’s a halfwidth Hangul letter, ssangsios.
- Ꮇ (Cherokee style) is the syllable “lu”.
- ᛗ (runic) is mannaz, the Elder Futhark rune for /m/.
Cyrillic М / м (U+041C / U+043C) and Greek Μ (U+039C) look like M too. Cyrillic lowercase м looks like a small capital M rather than a lowercase m, so it’s less effective for spoofing in lowercase text, but the capital is identical.
Frequency
M is about 2.4% of letters in English, level with W. It’s common in short words (me, my, more, from), so in a styled bio, the shape of m sets much of the rhythm of the text.
