Key facts

  • Lettering projects on this page are grouped into quote prints, name signs, journal headers, cards and gifts, and chalkboards.
  • Every piece needs one focal word that is larger, bolder or more decorative than the rest.
  • Three small pencil thumbnails let you reject weak layouts before drawing the final piece.
  • Edge margins should be at least as tall as the main letters, or a card looks cramped.
  • A pencil, eraser, ruler and black fine-liner cover most projects; add a brush pen, white gel pen or chalk markers for specific ones.

Lettering practice sticks when it produces something you want to keep. Drills build skills, but a finished card on the fridge or a header in a journal tells you whether the skills work together. The projects below are grouped by use. Each includes a specific technique to practise, so that the same drawing session teaches something new.

If you are completely new, read hand lettering for beginners first, since it explains guidelines, sketching and the pencil-to-ink workflow used throughout this list. For pen techniques, brush lettering and calligraphy for beginners go deeper.

How do I start any lettering project?

  1. Choose a focal word. In every piece, one word should lead. Make it larger, bolder or more decorative than the rest.
  2. Plan the shape. Draw a rough outline of the final shape, such as a rectangle, circle or banner, and fit the words inside it.
  3. Sketch in pencil, three versions. Small thumbnails are fast and let you reject weak layouts early.
  4. Use guide lines. Baseline, x-height and a centre line prevent the drift that makes lettering look accidental.
  5. Test your ink. Try the pen on the same paper, in a corner, before you commit.

If you want to see a word in a few styles before you draw it, the lettering image maker and calligraphy generator let you try fonts as reference. Use them to plan; draw the final piece by hand.

Lettering ideas for quote prints

A one-line quote is the standard first project, but the layout is what turns it into a poster.

Idea Technique to practise Layout tip
A four-word saying with one word in script Pairing script with plain capitals Script word is twice the size of the others
A lyric line stacked in three lines Even line lengths Adjust letter widths so each line is nearly the same width
A proverb inside a circle Lettering on a curve Draw a circle guide and letter along the inside edge
A single word as a large piece Decorating one letter at a time Add a different pattern inside each counter
A short poem with the first letter enlarged Drop cap design Give the initial three lines of height; see drop cap
A two-line quote with an ampersand Decorative symbols Draw the ampersand large and use the same colour as the focal word; see ampersand

Technique tip: contrast. Combine one of each: a script, a tall narrow capital style and a small spaced line of capitals. The eye then knows where to start, where to move and where to stop. Serif vs sans-serif helps with picking a supporting style.

What can I letter on a name sign?

Names are intimate and short, which suits a first full-colour piece. They are also useful because people see their own name more critically than any quote, so you get fast feedback.

  • Nursery name sign: letter the name in bubble capitals, then add a different pattern inside each letter. Keep the letters the same height and let the pattern vary. Our bubble letter generator gives reference shapes.
  • Door sign with a flourish: write the name in a brush script and add one long exit stroke on the last letter that underlines the name.
  • Bedroom wall initial: a single large letter, framed, with small symbols in the counter.
  • Place cards: a set of eight guests’ names in the same style. The technique to practise is consistency: use the same slant and size for each. A pencil grid at the start of the batch saves a lot of rubbing out.
  • Signature practice: try your own signature in three styles. The cursive signature generator gives ideas for connections, and cursive name generator works with a first name.

Technique tip: letter height. Names with tall letters (l, d, h) and descenders (g, y, j) need extra vertical space. Mark ascender and descender lines before you begin so the name does not collide with whatever is above and below.

Which lettering projects suit journal headers?

Journal pages are low-pressure places to try something, because a failed header is only a page.

  1. Monthly header: the month name in large brush script with the year small, in capitals, underneath.
  2. Weekly spread banner: a ribbon shape with the week’s dates inside. Practise lettering inside a defined box.
  3. Habit tracker title: use a block capital style with a drop shadow. Learn how a shadow works by choosing a light direction and sticking to it.
  4. Gratitude page: one word, repeated in different styles down the page, a sampler of your own range.
  5. Section dividers: a single word on a banner with small stars at each end.
  6. Index header: simple capitals with extra spacing, which is a lesson in tracking. See tracking.

Technique tip: a simple shadow. Draw the letters first. Pick a direction, say bottom right. Draw a second line offset by the same small amount on each stroke’s right and lower edge, then fill the space between. Keep the offset the same across the word.

What can I letter on cards and gifts?

A handmade card carries more weight than a bought one, and a short message is all it needs.

  • Birthday card with the age: a large number in outline style, filled with confetti dots.
  • Thank you card: two words, with the second word in script that connects to a simple flourish.
  • Sympathy or encouragement card: plain, quiet lettering in a single colour. Resist decoration; calm spacing is the technique here.
  • Gift tags: a name in small brush lettering. Use a pen with a fine tip and test on the tag paper.
  • Envelope addressing: one line of calligraphy for the name, plain print for the rest, so the post can read the address.
  • Wedding or anniversary card: names joined by an ampersand, with the ampersand drawn as the centrepiece. If you need typeface ideas, see our wedding fonts guide.

Technique tip: edge margins. Leave at least as much blank space at the edges as the height of your main letters. Cramped margins are the most common reason a card looks homemade in the wrong way.

How do I letter a chalkboard or sign?

Chalk is forgiving because you can wipe and redo, and it teaches you to plan before you commit.

Idea Technique Tip
Menu board with a top banner Banner and ribbon shapes Chalk the banner first, lettering inside last
Weekly specials list Hierarchy of three sizes Item name large, price medium, description small
Welcome sign for a party Mixed styles One script word, one plain capital word
Kitchen board with recipes Condensed capitals Tall narrow letters fit more text
Classroom word of the day Large single word Fill with simple dots or lines
Garden marker labels Small lettering on stone or wood Use a chalk marker and seal with spray if permanent

Technique tip: faux 3D. For chalkboard titles, draw the letter, then add a small shadow in a second colour on one side. A flat letter with a clean shadow beats a complicated style done badly. Our how to draw 3D letters guide explains the construction.

What digital and mixed projects can I try?

  • Phone wallpaper: letter a short phrase on paper, scan it, and place it on a plain background.
  • Bio and caption art: if you also post text online, try plain-text decoration from the text decorator as a quick way to preview a mood before drawing.
  • Sticker sheet: twelve single words in the same style at the same height.
  • Bookmark: a vertical word stack, one letter per line, with a simple border.

How do I turn single pieces into a series?

A set of related pieces teaches consistency, which is the skill that turns attempts into style. Choose one rule, such as the same pen, same slant, same colour palette, and make several pieces under it. A set of twelve month headers, six place cards or four seasonal cards will show quickly which letters you draw well and which still need work.

How do I use references well?

Look at real lettering for ideas, but make your own versions. Copy to learn strokes, but when you publish or sell a design, use your own words and your own letter shapes. The best lettering ideas often come from combining two things you have practised, not from copying a whole piece.

Frequently asked questions

Basics

What are the best lettering ideas for beginners to try first?
Pick a short word or a single line of five words or fewer. A name, a month heading or a two-word phrase gives you enough letters to practise spacing without the layout becoming complicated. Sketch in pencil, ink one version and compare it with your sketch. Short projects finish quickly, which keeps practice rewarding.
How do I choose which quote to letter?
Choose a line you would not mind reading many times, short enough to fit on the page at a readable size. Quotes of four to ten words suit most layouts. Use original lines, your own words or public-domain texts, and check any quote you did not write before selling or publishing the artwork.

Where it works

Which lettering ideas work for a journal?
Try a monthly header in large brush script with the year small underneath, a weekly spread banner shaped like a ribbon, a habit tracker title in block capitals with a drop shadow, or section dividers with a single word on a banner. Journal pages are low-pressure, because a failed header is only a page.
Which lettering ideas suit a chalkboard?
Menu boards with a banner on top, weekly specials in three sizes (item large, price medium, description small), welcome signs mixing one script word with plain capitals, and condensed capitals for recipe boards. Chalk is forgiving because you can wipe and redo, and it teaches you to plan before you commit.

How it works

How do I plan a lettering layout?
Choose one focal word, make it the largest and most decorative, and set the other words in simpler, smaller styles. Sketch three small thumbnails before drawing large. Guide lines, a centre line and a rough box showing the final shape make the layout much easier than starting freehand.
How do I add a simple shadow to lettering?
Draw the letters first and pick a light direction, such as bottom right. Draw a second line offset by the same small amount along each stroke's right and lower edge, then fill the space between. Keep the offset identical across the whole word, or the shadow will look uneven.

Tips & limits

How should I letter an envelope address?
Use one line of calligraphy or brush lettering for the name and plain print for the rest of the address, so the postal service can read it. Test your pen on a spare envelope first, because some inks bleed or smudge on envelope paper, and leave generous margins around the block.
What supplies do I need for these projects?
A pencil, eraser, ruler and a black fine-liner cover most projects. Add a brush pen for flowing scripts, a white gel pen for highlights, and chalk markers or chalk for boards. Use smooth paper for pens and the right surface for each medium. Test ink on a scrap before the final piece.
Can I use these ideas for gifts or products I sell?
The lettering you draw is yours. If you use a font as a reference, check its licence: many fonts allow personal use but require a separate commercial licence. Open-source fonts under licences such as the SIL Open Font License are usually safe to use commercially. Quotes you did not write may be under copyright, so check them.
