Z in Graffiti Letters

Rendered in the Sedgwick Ave Display typeface, an open-source font. It is a reference shape, not a hand-drawn letter.
Z is a lightning bolt: a top bar, a diagonal and a bottom bar. It is a letter with a lot of energy and very little structure, so every part has to pull its weight. In graffiti the bars become arrows or flicks and the diagonal gets thick and sharp. Z is often the last letter of a word, which makes it the right place for a finishing flourish.

How to draw a graffiti capital Z
- 1Draw a top bar, a diagonal from the top right to the bottom left and a bottom bar, leaning forward as one shape.
- 2Make the bars slightly different lengths, the bottom one longer, so the letter feels stable on its base.
- 3Thicken the diagonal until it is the heaviest part of the letter, then match the bars to it.
- 4Outline the body and trim the two inner corners with small cuts so the triangles above and below the diagonal stay open.
- 5Tip the bars with arrows or spikes, fill, highlight the diagonal's upper edge and add a block under the bottom bar.
Tip: Draw the diagonal first and hang the bars off its ends. A confident diagonal makes the Z look fast, and the bars can then be adjusted around it.
How to draw a graffiti lowercase z
- 1Draw a small zigzag at x-height with a short top bar, a diagonal and a bottom bar.
- 2Thicken the diagonal and the bars equally, and round the inner corners slightly.
- 3Add a flick to the end of the bottom bar to link with the next letter, or extend it into an arrow.
- 4Outline, keeping the two triangles open.
- 5Fill and add a highlight along the diagonal.
Tip: Lowercase z is often drawn as a number 3 shape or a looped line in tags, which makes it flow into the next letter.
What makes Z awkward or easy
Z is built from three straight strokes with sharp corners, and the corners fill with outline. The two triangular gaps are tight, and the diagonal can look like a slash if the bars are too thin. As a letter, Z is stiff unless you tilt the bars or curve the diagonal. It also sits at the end of a word, so its right side is free to extend.
Variations
A tag Z is a quick zigzag or a number 2 with a bar. A throw-up Z is a fat bolt with a single outline. A piece Z might have arrows on both bars, a curved diagonal and a deep block shadow. Wildstyle Z turns the bars into ribbons that wrap behind the previous letter and across the word.
Common mistakes with graffiti Z
The bars are perfectly horizontal and the Z looks like a sign.
Tilt both bars upward at the right to add movement.
The diagonal is thin against thick bars.
Thicken the diagonal until it matches or exceeds the bars.
The triangles inside the Z close up.
Cut the inner corners with small diagonals and keep the gaps wider than the strokes.
The two bars are the same length and the Z feels static.
Make the bottom bar longer than the top so the letter sits firmly on its base.
Ideas for graffiti Z
Z begins names such as Zoe, Zane and Zara, and appears in words like Zen and Buzz, and in crew names such as Zed. Try drawing ten Zs with different diagonals: straight, curved, doubled, lightning and broken. See which fits your handstyle.

Graffiti Z you can copy and paste
Unicode has no graffiti alphabet. For close copy-paste forms use bold gothic 𝖅 𝖟, black squares 🆉 or bubble letters Ⓩ ⓩ. They are fixed glyphs, so the bars and diagonal cannot be tilted or curved.

- Graffiti AlphabetThe graffiti alphabet is a set of bold, connected letters that are deliberately distorted so they look fast, large and hard to copy.
