V in Graffiti Letters

Rendered in the Sedgwick Ave Display typeface, an open-source font. It is a reference shape, not a hand-drawn letter.
V is two diagonals meeting at a point, which makes it one of the sharpest letters in the alphabet. In graffiti the point can be flattened, rounded or extended into a spike, and the two arms can be different heights or thicknesses. V is also a letter that leaves big triangles of space above its arms, which you can fill with arrows or let neighbouring letters occupy.
Outline version to colour or trace
How to draw a graffiti capital V
- 1Draw two leaning diagonals that meet at a point on the baseline, with the right arm longer than the left.
- 2Decide the point: a sharp spike, a flat cut or a rounded dip, and keep it consistent with the rest of the word.
- 3Thicken both arms to the same width and let them swell slightly toward the top.
- 4Outline the body and keep the inner V open, so the counter is a clear triangle.
- 5Tip each arm with an arrow or a spike, fill, highlight the left arm and add a block along the right side.
Tip: Let the two arms overlap a little at the bottom instead of meeting exactly. The overlap gives you a solid point that survives the outline.
How to draw a graffiti lowercase v
- 1Draw a small V at x-height, leaning forward, narrower than the capital.
- 2Thicken the arms and round the bottom point slightly so it does not stab below the baseline.
- 3Add a small flick on the right arm that links to the next letter.
- 4Outline and keep the inner triangle open.
- 5Fill and add a highlight along the left arm.
Tip: A lowercase v is often drawn as a hook shape in tags, with a left stroke dropping into a curved rise on the right.
What makes V awkward or easy
V has a sharp point at the bottom and two long diagonals, and the outline of the point adds more weight than the arms can bear. The inner triangle is a sharp V that fills in quickly. The wide gap above the arms also leaves a hole in a word. These features make V a good letter for arrows and spikes, and a poor one for subtle detail.
Variations
A tag V is a quick check mark. A throw-up V is a fat wedge with a small inner triangle. A piece V might have a point extended into a spike, arrows on both arms and a block under the point. Wildstyle V hooks one arm around the neighbouring letter and turns the point into a loop.
Common mistakes with graffiti V
The point is a sharp stab that cuts into the line below.
Round it slightly or flatten it so it sits on the baseline.
The two arms are the same height and the V looks like a funnel.
Make the right arm taller and longer than the left, so the letter leans.
The inner triangle fills in when the outline is added.
Draw the triangle first at full size, then build the arms around it.
The arms are thin sticks.
Thicken them until they have as much weight as the other letters in the word.
Ideas for graffiti V
V starts names like Vic, Vera and Vince, and words like Vibe and Vandal. Try a sheet of Vs with different points: spike, flat, round, looped and doubled. You will find which point shape suits your other letters.

- Graffiti AlphabetThe graffiti alphabet is a set of bold, connected letters that are deliberately distorted so they look fast, large and hard to copy.
