Q in Graffiti Letters

Rendered in the Sedgwick Ave Display typeface, an open-source font. It is a reference shape, not a hand-drawn letter.
Q is an O with a tail, and the tail is the whole point. It is one of the rarest letters in a crew name, which gives you room to do something unusual with it. The tail can be a slash, a curl, a lightning bolt or an arrow, and it can cut across the counter or sweep out below the baseline. The challenge is keeping the ring a ring, so the letter does not turn into an O with a stray scratch.
Outline version to colour or trace
How to draw a graffiti capital Q
- 1Draw a leaning oval ring in the same way as an O, wider than tall and tilted forward.
- 2Add the tail as a diagonal stroke that starts inside the lower right of the ring and exits beyond it.
- 3Thicken the ring unevenly and make the tail as thick as the thinnest part of the ring.
- 4Outline the ring and the tail as one shape, and keep the counter open above the tail.
- 5Finish the tail with an arrow or a curl, fill, highlight the upper left and add a block along the lower right.
Tip: Let the tail cross the ring instead of just touching it. The overlap makes the tail look like part of the letter and not a separate stroke.
How to draw a graffiti lowercase q
- 1Draw a small bowl at x-height and a stem on its right side that drops below the baseline.
- 2Thicken the bowl and the stem so they are the same width.
- 3Merge them into one outline, keeping the bowl's counter wide open.
- 4Finish the stem with a flick, a block foot or an arrow at the bottom of the descender.
- 5Fill, then highlight the upper left of the bowl.
Tip: A lowercase q is a mirrored p in disguise, and a tag version often keeps the descender and drops the bowl detail.
What makes Q awkward or easy
Q has two parts that must read as one letter. If the tail is too short it reads as an O with a mark, and if it is too long it unbalances the word. The tail also lands in the space below the baseline, so it needs room. Because Q is rare, the shape can be exaggerated more than most letters without anyone mistaking it for another one.
Variations
A tag Q is a loop with a quick slash. A throw-up Q is a fat ring with a short, chunky tail, outlined once. A piece Q might have a tail shaped like a lightning bolt or an arrow, a highlighted counter and a deep block. Wildstyle Q sends the tail across the neighbouring letters like a ribbon.
Common mistakes with graffiti Q
The tail floats beside the ring and does not touch it.
Start the tail inside the ring so it overlaps the lower right and reads as part of the letter.
The tail is as large as the ring and the Q looks like two letters.
Shorten the tail to about half the width of the ring.
The ring is a perfect circle and the tail looks pasted on.
Squash the ring into a leaning oval and angle the tail to match the lean.
The lowercase q is a copy of the lowercase p.
Put the stem on the right side of the bowl and finish the descender with a hook, since q mirrors p.
Ideas for graffiti Q
Q is uncommon in names, but it starts words like Queen, Quick and Quest, and appears in crew names such as Qube. Use it to practise tails: fill a page with ten different tails, slash, curl, bolt, arrow, and see which one fits your handstyle.

Graffiti Q you can copy and paste
Unicode has no graffiti alphabet. For the closest copy-paste forms use bold gothic 𝕼 𝖖, black squares 🆀 or bubble Ⓠ ⓠ. They are fixed glyphs, so the tail will be a plain mark, not a sweep that crosses the ring.

- Graffiti AlphabetThe graffiti alphabet is a set of bold, connected letters that are deliberately distorted so they look fast, large and hard to copy.
