What Is a Monospace Font?

By Maya Chen, lettering designer and type educator · Checked by Jordan Hale · · How we review content

In most fonts, letters take up space in proportion to their shape: an i is narrow and an m wide. These are proportional fonts. In a monospace font (also fixed-width or non-proportional), every glyph is given the same advance width. The i gets extra space on each side so that it fills the same cell as the m. The effect is a regular, mechanical rhythm.

Compare these two lines, one proportional and one monospace:

Where monospace comes from

Typewriters made monospace universal. A typewriter moves the carriage the same distance for every key, so each letter must fit the same width, and designers made letters such as i and l with wide serifs and feet to fill their cell. Early computer terminals and line printers inherited the grid, and programming has kept it, since a fixed grid keeps columns of code and data aligned.

Features that make a good monospace font

Feature Why it matters
Distinct 0 and O (slashed or dotted zero) Prevents errors in codes and passwords
Distinct 1, l and I The three look alike in many sans fonts
Wide, open letter shapes Letters such as i, l and t need a lot of drawing to fill the cell
Even colour Wide serifs on narrow letters keep the visual weight uniform

Uses and drawbacks

Use monospace for code, terminal output, tables of numbers, ASCII art and anything where column alignment or character counting matters. It is a poor choice for long prose: the empty space around narrow letters breaks up word shapes and slows reading. Many designers use it deliberately as a “technical” or retro voice in headings or labels, which is an example of a display font use.

Adjusting tracking in a monospace font keeps the grid, but widens the cell for every character equally. Many monospace faces are also slab serifs, such as Courier, though plenty of modern code fonts are sans-serif.

Monospace in lettering

Hand lettering in a typewriter style is simple to set up: rule a grid with a fixed cell width and put one letter in each cell. Letters like i and l get a foot and a head to fill their cell, and m and w are squeezed. That is the whole look. Unusual width relationships appear automatically, which is why a typewriter-style lettered quote looks mechanical even if the strokes are shaky. You can preview it in the lettering image maker, and our what is lettering guide explains why lettering allows any shape to be adapted.

Monospace in fancy Unicode text

Unicode includes MATHEMATICAL MONOSPACE letters and digits: 𝙰𝙱𝙲 𝚊𝚋𝚌 𝟶𝟷𝟸𝟹. Our generators offer them as the monospace (typewriter) style. The characters are just alphabet entries in Unicode, with no inherent width: the equal-width look comes from the font that supports them, and most platforms use a typewriter-like face. Spaces between words still come from whichever font is around, so alignment is imperfect. The style is popular for a “code” or “typewriter” aesthetic in bios, though, like all mathematical alphanumerics, it is read letter by letter by some screen readers, as described in fancy text accessibility. To go back to plain text, use the unstyle text tool.

Common confusions

  • Monospace is not always a serif or typewriter style. Many monospace fonts are clean sans-serifs.
  • Monospace is not just wide letter spacing. It sets each glyph to one width, shaping each letter for it.
  • Monospace Unicode is not a font. It is a set of characters whose appearance is up to the device.

Frequently asked questions

Why do programmers use monospace fonts?
Fixed width keeps characters aligned in columns, which makes indentation, tables and diffs predictable and makes it easy to count characters in a line. Good coding fonts also make similar characters, such as 0 and O or 1 and l, easy to tell apart, which prevents mistakes.
Is Courier the only monospace font?
No. Courier is the famous typewriter one, but there are many others: Consolas, Menlo, Source Code Pro, JetBrains Mono, Fira Mono, Andale Mono and IBM Plex Mono among them. Some monospace faces have slab serifs; many modern coding fonts are sans-serif.
What is the monospace Unicode style?
It is the Mathematical Monospace alphabet, with letters such as 𝚖𝚘𝚗𝚘 and digits 𝟶𝟷𝟸. Each is a separate character, with the letters at U+1D670 to U+1D6A3 and the digits at U+1D7F6 to U+1D7FF. Whether it displays with equal widths depends on the font that draws it, but most systems use a typewriter-style face.
Does monospace text keep its alignment when pasted into a bio?
Not reliably. The characters are monospace styled, but the app's fallback font may not draw them at equal widths, and spaces are still drawn in the surrounding proportional font. Columns therefore often drift. For aligned tables in plain text, use a platform that supports code blocks instead.
