How to Write Mama in Cursive

By Maya Chen, lettering designer and type educator · Checked by Jordan Hale · · How we review content

"Mama" in Playwrite US Trad, a typeface modelled on traditional school cursive.

Mama is four letters of just two shapes, M and a, so it looks easy and rewards smooth rhythm. The challenge is that the m has three humps and the a is closed, and the join between them changes depending on whether the m is capital or lowercase. Written well, it is lovely for Mother's Day cards and keepsakes.

Letter by letter

Each distinct letter in "Mama" has its own stroke-by-stroke page.

The joins in Mama

  • Ma: Capital M connects: its final undercurve leads straight into the a. Watch the size, though. Make the a about half the capital's height so the M clearly leads, and keep the join smooth without an extra lift.
  • am: The a exits with an undercurve that must roll over the top into the m's first hump, so the connection is rounded rather than pointed. A pointed join makes the first hump look like the second half of a u.
  • ma: Finish the third hump of the lowercase m with a baseline undercurve, then begin the final a's oval above it. Close the a and let the exit trail off, or add a small flourish.

Tricky spots

  • Counting the humps: The lowercase m needs exactly three humps, evenly spaced. Say them softly as you write: one, two, three. Adding or missing a hump turns mama into nana, mana or something unreadable.
  • Closing both a's: The two a's must be fully closed ovals. In a word that already has plenty of curves, an open a looks like u or o and can blur the middle of the word.
  • Capital M style: Older Palmer hands start with a loop at the top left, while newer models start from the baseline with an overcurve. Pick one style and stay with it. Mixing them makes the capital look uncertain.

Capitals

Use Mama with a capital when it is a name, as in Mama, I love you, and mama in lowercase when it is just a noun or a hashtag. Capital M connects in school cursive, so Mama can flow in one line from M to the final a. Lowercase mama begins with an overcurve hump, which you can enter from a flourish.

Variations and styles

On a card, write Mama large and add a heart where the m humps meet the a. Signature-style mama can begin with a long entry stroke before the first hump. In brush calligraphy, thicken the downstrokes and keep the undercurve hairline so the repeated shapes stay light. Mama works well stacked above a short date on a keepsake print.

As a tattoo

Mama is popular as a script tattoo, often in a family member's own handwriting. The repeated humps need space, so use at least 8 mm x-height and keep gaps between the strokes consistent. Avoid tiny sizes where the three humps of m could fill in. A hand-written source gives a personal touch and keeps the rhythm natural.

Copy-paste versions of Mama

In lowercase, mama needs no borrowed letters: 𝓂𝒶𝓂𝒶 comes entirely from the main script block. A capital changes that, because ℳ (U+2133) in ℳ𝒶𝓂𝒶 is a Letterlike glyph and may sit a little differently from the three letters after it. Bold script 𝓜𝓪𝓶𝓪 is uniform either way.

Mama in cursive: questions

How do I write the M in Mama in cursive?
Start near the baseline with an overcurve, draw three slanted downstrokes joined by rounded humps and finish with an undercurve that leads into the a. Older Palmer-style hands start with a small loop at the top left, which is also correct.
Why does my mama look like nana?
Most likely your m has two humps or the first overcurve is too shallow. The m has three rounded humps, the n only two. Check each letter by counting downstrokes: three for m, two for n. Mama has two m letters, so count carefully.
Does the a in mama connect to the m after it?
Yes, the first a flows into the second m. Its undercurve exit has to roll over the top into the m's first hump. Make that join round rather than pointed, so the hump does not look like part of a u, and keep the spacing even.
Is mama good for a tattoo in cursive?
It is a common choice, but plan for the three humps. Choose a size where the humps stay open, around 8 to 10 mm in height, and consider writing it in your mother's own handwriting. Test the stencil before the tattoo is done.
